Greenbush Race Park

Some old and one new name get the checkers at GRP

Over two inches of rain the day before had Greenbush Race Park officials pondering if they were going to be able to race or not, and at 2 pm the decision was made to go ahead with the race program despite the cool temps and strong winds.

The Wissota Midwest Modifieds would send 14 cars to start their feature and pole sitter Alex Johnson of Karlstad, MN, was the early leader. Three early cautions made for a slow start to the race but they managed to run the last 13 caution free. Johnson led the first three laps before Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, grabbed the lead in corner four. It wasn't easy for Olson as Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls was never more than a couple of car lengths back. With one to go Blacklance got his nose on the inside of Olson, but didn't have enough momentum to get beside him and Olson went on to pick up his second win of the year and sweep of the evening. Blacklance finished second and Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN, third. Patrick Sobolik of Hallock, MN, picked up the other heat win.

The Wissota Pure Stock feature would run caution free and the heats were a little tough on the cars as only four of the seven were able to take the green flag. Dusty Caspers of Bagley, MN, started third and lead the first two laps before Steve Nordhagen of Thief River Falls took over the lead in corner four. Caspers chased Nordhagen for the rest of the race but didn't have enough to take the top spot back as Nordhagen went on to get his third win of the year. Caspers finished second and won the lone heat and Deryk Weleski of Bemidji, MN, third.

A couple of early cautions got the Wissota Modifieds off to a slow start. Tim Thomas of West Fargo, N.D. lead the way until lap nine before Josh Beaulieu of Bemidji made the pass for the lead in corner four with 11 to go. Beaulieu managed to distance himself from the rest of the field over the last half of the race until a late caution would set up a green, white, checkered finish. Beaulieu was able to hold everyone off to get the sweep and his first win at the Park since 2013. Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN, finished second and Dustin Wahl of Greenbush third. Tyler Peterson of Hickson, N.D. picked up the other heat win.

John Halvorson of Warren, MN, would sit on the pole for the Wissota Street feature and lead the first lap, but before they notched lap two the leader slide off the top of corner four bringing out the only caution of the race. Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, would inherit the lead and lead the next two laps before Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls passed Gust out of corner four for the lead. Gust, Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, and Ryan Johnson of Karlstad would not make it easy for Blacklance, as all four drivers battled each other for the rest of the race. When the checkers flew it would be Blacklance picking up his third win of the year with Pederson finishing second and Johnson third. Doug Van Mill of Bagley picked up the lone heat win.

The 4 Cylinder feature had John Current of Bemidji starting fifth and leading all twelve laps for his fourth win of the year. Kalin Honer of Laporte, MN, finished a couple of car lengths back in second and Waylon Current of Bemidji finished third. Honer picked up the only heat win.

Only two weekends of racing remain for the Greenbush Race Park and up next will be a regular night of racing featuring the Wissota classes of Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks along with the 4 Cylinders. Pit gates open at 4:30, Grandstands at 5:30. Cutoff for the draw is at 6 pm with racing starting at 7 pm sharp.
