Greenbush Race Park

Aberle, Duray, Blacklance, and Roth get GRP wins

It was scorching hot all over Wissota Country and after two weeks of rainouts, the Greenbush Race Park finally got its 2021 race season under way.

Our newly sanctioned Wissota Pure Stocks were the first feature of the night and seven cars rolled out for the green flag. Pole sitter Steve Nordhagen of Thief River Falls, MN, led the opening lap, but pushed it high in corner four the following lap and that allowed Michael Roth of Deerwood, MN, and Dusty Caspers of Bagley, MN, to sneak by. Caspers chased Roth for the next 13 laps, but couldn't get close enough to make a pass for the lead and Roth would go on to get the win, Caspers would finish second and Tra Ewalt of Thief River Falls, MN, third. Caspers would pick up the lone heat win.

The Wissota Midwest Modifieds would send 13 of 14 cars out for their feature, but with six cautions in the first two laps, track officials decided to put them in a time out and had the entire field pull into the infield while the Street feature was run. After the time out, Hallock, MN, driver Patrick Sobolik led the way. With five to go Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, would get by Sobolik coming out of corner four. The last caution came with four to go and Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, would get by Sobolik for second on the restart then set his sights on Olson. Olson took the white flag in the lead with Blacklance on the outside, with the pair racing side by side through one and two, down the backstretch, and would set up a drag race out of corner four to the checkered flag. At the flag it would be Blacklance getting the win by about a foot over Olson, Sobolik would finish third. Heat wins went to Blacklance and Harley Kroening of Bemidji.

Nine of ten Wissota Streets took the green flag for their feature and outside pole sitter Daniel Aberle of Finley, ND jumped to the early lead. Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, pushed Aberle the entire race and managed to take the lead away on lap 10 coming out of corner four, but three laps later Aberle would take the lead back in the same corner. Dave Meyer of Thief River Falls, MN, would challenge Pederson for the second spot and getting it with one to go. Aberle would get the win with Meyer finishing second and Pederson third. Heat wins to Pederson and Seth Kloestreich of Grand Forks, ND.

Only six Wissota Modifieds were on hand for the evening, and Jordan Duray of Halma, MN, was in control of the feature until a caution with four to go put everyone on his bumper. Duray would have to hold off a late challenge from Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, to pick up the win with Wahl finishing second and Mark Esala of Thief River Falls, MN, finishing third and getting the lone heat win.

The MinnKota POWRI Lighting Sprints had 11 cars lined up for their feature and pole sitter Bryce Haugeberg of West Fargo, ND, was out to the early lead with Alex Truscinski and Dexter Dvergsten both of Greenbush, MN, in hot pursuit. Haugeberg slowed going into corner three on lap five and came to a stop on the front stretch bring out the caution. This would hand the lead over to Truscinski for the restart. Over the last couple of years Truscinski and Dvergsten have had some incredible races at the Park, and this one was no exception. Dvergsten chased Truscinski and finally got around him with two to go out of corner four. Dvergsten would go on to the get the win and sweep on his birthday, with Truscinski finishing second. Father Alan Truscinski would finish third. Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, would pick up the other heat win.

The 4 Cylinder feature was delayed for about 10 minutes as a few raindrops made an appearance. But they were able to get their feature in. John Current of Bemidji, MN, led the first eight laps until Kalin Honer of LaPorte, MN, grabbed the lead out of corner two. But coming to the checkered flag Honer spun in corner four handing the win and the sweep to Current. Waylon Current of Bemidji, MN, finished second and Gordon Hunter of LaPorte, MN, third.

Up next at the Park will be the first appearance of the summer by the NLRA Late Models. Joining the Late Models will be Wissota classes Streets, Midwest Mods and Pure Stocks along with the Outlaw Mini Mods. Pits open at 4:30pm, Grandstands at 5:30pm, cutoff for the draw is at 6pm with the green flag dropping at 7pm sharp.
