Greenbush Race Park

First time winners and close finishes at GRP

A beautiful day turned into an excellent and crazy night of racing, at the Greenbush Race Park, as 74 cars signed in at the pit gate highlighted by a special for the Lightning Sprints.

The annual Lightning Sprint special drew 15 cars for their 25 lap feature, and after one lap Wes Van Drunen of Fargo, ND brought out the first stoppage as he ended up upside down in corner four. When they restarted, everyone got through one and two, but Alan Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, got a little sideways in four and was tagged by another car bringing out the caution, while everyone was slowing, Kelsi Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, run over the rear tire of another car putting her on her lid and coming to rest on her side ending her night. When they restarted Alex Truscinski of Greenbush, MN, was out in front and gone. Truscinski held about a half straightaway lead over Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN. Dvergsten chased Truscinski for 23 laps and just couldn't get any closer, as Truscinski would get the win, Dvergsten would win his heat and finish second, and Cody Swenson of Middle River, MN, would finish third. The other heat win went to Pederson.

The closest race of the night came in the 14 car Street feature. John Halvorson of Warren, MN, started outside pole and led the first three laps before getting passed by Dave Meyer of Thief River Falls, MN, at the flag stand, but coming out of corner two Doug Van Mill of Bagley, MN, passed Meyer for the top spot. Van Mill was chased by Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN, Johnson was never more than a car length behind Van Mill, and coming to the white flag, both were side by side as they came out of four. Van Mill had the slight edge out of two, but the pair was side by side through three and four with a drag race to the finish line. In probably one of the closest finishes at GRP Johnson edged out Van Mill by .006 seconds for his third win of the year and a sweep of the evening. Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, finished third. Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN, picked up the other heat win.

For the third straight week, another light field of Modifieds was on hand, as only eight cars took the green flag for their 20 lap feature. Outside pole sitter Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks, MN, was off and running from the drop of the green. By the halfway point, Strand had a full straightaway lead over second place, and that's about the time Michael Greseth of Harwood, ND moved into second and started to run down Stand. Greseth was gaining on Strand and was helped tremendously by lapped traffic. Greseth was able to get beside Strand with about two to go, but Strand was able to hold off the hard charger to get his third win of the year. Greseth would finish second and win the heat and Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, would finish third.

Jordan Wahl of Greenbush, MN, would start on the outside pole of the 17 car Midwest Modified feature. Three early cautions kept everyone close, but Wahl would hold the top spot. The last 10 laps ran caution free and Wahl would have to hold off Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, to pick up his first win since 2016. Olson would finish second and Dustin Strand third. Heat wins went to Hunter Hougard of Warren, MN, Alex Langland of Enderlin, ND and Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN.

The 13 car Pure Stock feature was slowed terribly by six cautions in the first four laps. In the end it would be Brent Walsh of Roseau, MN, picking up his first ever feature win, and sweep of the evening. Ryan Hagen of Thief River Falls, MN, would finish second and win his heat and Jace Gust of Strathcona, MN, finished third.

The Outlaw Mini Mod feature ran caution free and found Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN, back in victory lane for the third time this year with a sweep of the evening. Tyler Johnson finished second and Justin Besch third, both drivers are from International Falls, MN.
