More first time winners at Greenbush Race Park

Well the Greenbush area got lucky once again and missed all the heavy rain that some in the area got this past Thursday and Friday, and even the scattered showers predicted for race day seemed to dissipate the closer it got to race time and that set up a great night of racing at GRP.

The NLRA Late Models had three visits planned at the Park this year, the first was cancelled due to Covid, the second rained out, so the third time was the charm as 17 cars lined up for their feature. At the drop of the green, outside pole sitter Dustin Strand of East Grand Forks, MN, was out in front. Strand was in control until Cole Schill of Horace, ND caught him about 10 laps in and made it known it wasn't going to be easy for Strand. Schill got beside Strand a couple of time but Strand held each challenge off. Schill fell back when he got caught between a lap car and the guardrail. A caution on lap 16 would change things, on the restart Strand developed steering problems and that allowed Ryan Corbett of East Grand Forks, MN, to get the lead in three and four. The last caution came with seven to go and Corbett would have to hold off the hard charging Brad Seng of Grand Forks, ND Seng started third but was tagged with a caution before one lap was complete, sending him to the rear for the restart. Corbett was able to hold off Seng to get his first GRP win, Seng finished second and won his heat, and Brody Troftgruben of Grand Forks, ND was third. Strand picked up the other heat win.

An extremely light field of Modifieds were on hand as only eight lined up for their feature. Jordan Duray of Halma, MN, used his outside front row starting spot to grab the lead. It wouldn't last long as Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN, would make the pass for the top spot coming out of corner four on lap three. Holtan was in control until a caution with seven to go put the rest of the field on his rear bumper. Holtan would hold off a challenge from Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, to get his second win in three weeks. Wahl would finish second and Gary Johnson of Karlstad, MN, third. Mark Esala of Thief River Falls, MN, would get the heat win.

Ten of eleven cars would take the green for the Midwest Modified feature, and it would be pole sitter Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN, out in front. The last caution came with six to go and on the restart Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN, would make the pass for the lead out of corner two. Blacklance was debuting a brand new car and he made it pay off as he went on to get his second win of the year and a sweep on the evening. Olson would finish second and Hunter Hougard of Warren, MN, third. Lance Schill of Langdon, ND picked up the other heat win.

Joe Potter of Euclid, MN, was in control early in the 10 car Street feature. Potter led the field by about a half a straightaway. But the only caution of the race came on lap 10 and put everyone on his rear bumper. Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, would restart second and two laps later passed Potter for the lead out of corner two. Gust would go on to get the checkers and his first win of the year, Potter would finish second and Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN, third. Pederson and John Halvorson of Warren, MN, would get the heat wins.

A slow start due to three early cautions in the 10 car Pure Stock feature, actually lead to a pretty good race. Ryan Hagen of Thief River Falls, MN, was the early leader having to hold off Austin Brekkestran of Thief River Falls, MN. On the last restart, Jeremy Anderson of Newfolden, MN, would get by Hagen in corner two for the lead. Over the last dozen laps Anderson and Hagen had a great race, even going a couple of laps side by side. Anderson would pull away over the last couple of laps to get his first win of the year, Hagen would finish second and Brekkestran third. Heat wins went to Steve Nordhagen of Thief River Falls, MN, and Dawson Kimble of Bemidji, MN.
