Greenbush Race Park

A night for first time winners at GRP

The Greenbush Race Park finally caught a break and missed out on some rain that fell in the area Friday night, and this would set up for a great night of racing on Saturday evening.

Connor Graff of Greenbush, MN, would sit on the pole for the Midwest Modified feature, and he used it to his full advantage as he quickly got out in front of the 10-car field. Ed Lehrke of Hallock, MN, and Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN, made sure Graff didn't run away with it. Graff was on a rail, but a caution on lap eight would put everyone on his back bumper and also took out a handful of cars. On the restart Graff would now have to contend with Patrick Sobolik of Hallock, MN, and Gary James Nelson of Ponemah, MN. Sobolik would pose the biggest challenge and late in the race Graff and Sobolik would swap the lead, but it would be Graff edging Sobolik at the line to pick up his first ever GRP feature win and sweep of the evening. Sobolik would finish second and Nelson third. The other heat win went to Tyler McClellan of Laporte, MN.

James Meagher of Grand Forks, ND was looking to pick up his second feature win is as many nights in the 12 car Street feature. Meagher started outside pole and was out in front early. A couple of early cautions kept the field close. Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN, started 5th and on lap 12 after Meagher bobbled in four grabbed the lead. One lap later the last caution flew setting up a green, white, checkered finish. Boen would hold everyone off to get the win and end a two-year dry spell at the Park. Meagher would finish second and Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN, third. John Halvorson of Warren, MN, and Gust would get the heat wins.

Mark Esala of Thief River Falls, MN, was out in front early for the 11 car Modified feature. Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN, and Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN, made sure Esala knew he had company. Two cautions on lap 13 would set up a green, white, checkered finish and coming to the white flag, Holtan would make his move out of corner four for the lead and go on to get the win and sweep. It was Holtan's first Park win since 2018. Esala finished second and Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN, third. Shane Wahl would pick up the other heat win.

Macey Anderson of Viking, MN, looked strong early in the 14 car Pure Stock feature. Anderson would lose the lead on lap four to Steve Nordhagen of Thief River Falls, MN, in corner two. Ryan Hagen of Thief River Falls, MN, would get by Anderson on a restart one lap later. But by lap eight, both Nordhagen and Hagen went up in smoke handing the lead back to Anderson. This race would also come down to a green, white, checkered finish and Anderson would hold off a hard charging Dusty Caspers of Bagley, MN, to go on and get her first ever GRP feature win. Caspers would finish second and win his heat and Ryan Anderson of Newfolden, MN, third. Hagen would get the other heat win.

In the Outlaw Mini Mod feature, Justin Besch of International Falls, MN, would out run Tyler Jonson of International Falls, MN, to pick up his first ever GRP feature win. Jerry Larson of Grand Rapids, MN, would finish third and Kelly Steele of International Falls, MN, would get the heat win.

John Current of Bemidji, MN, would sweep the evening for his third feature win of the year in the 4 Cylinders. Kalin Honer of Laporte, MN, was second and Shannon George of Bagley, MN, third.

Up next at the Park we will see racing from the Modifieds, Streets, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and Outlaw Mini Mods. Pit gates open at 4:30 pm and grandstands open at 5:30 pm. Draw cutoff is at 6 pm with racing getting under way at 7 pm. Remember masks and social distancing are suggested. The Baker Cup race let be postponed until next year due to the Covid-19.
