Paull collects big Modified check at Greenbush Race Park
The Wissota PolyDome Dirt Track Series is starting to wind down at the Greenbush Race Park with only three race weekends left for the 2017 season. But the racing is still as good as it's ever been.
It was the 19th running of the Elliot Baker memorial cup for the Modifieds and Gavin Paull of Fort Francis, ON, Canada would take full advantage of his pole position starting spot. The 30-lap race was slowed by only three cautions, but Paull was never challenged for the lead. There was plenty of good racing going on behind Paull, as Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN and Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN battled for most of the race for the second and third spot. Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain MB was quietly working his way forward from his ninth starting spot and was able to get around Holtan with about three to go but couldn't catch Paull. Paull would pick up his first Baker cup win, while Delaine would finish second and Jordan Duray of Halma, MN would finish third and win his heat. Other heat wins went to Wahl and Ryan Kereluk of St. Andrews, MB.
Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN would lead the first eight laps of the Midwest Modified feature when the first caution flew on lap eight. On lap nine Murray Kozie of Headingley, MB took a nasty roll off of corner one. The race was red flagged for about two hours as the EMT crews had to cut Kozie out of his car and then was airlifted to Grand Forks, ND for further observation. As of this writing, Kozie’s condition is unknown. When the racing resumed, Wahl was able to lead a couple of more laps before he brought out the last caution on lap 11 for spinning in corner three. This would hand the lead over to Nate Reynolds of Edinburg, ND with four to go. Reynolds would go on to pick up his sixth win of the year. Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN would finish second and Steve Hougard of Strandquist, MN third. Heat wins went to Wahl and Hunter Hougard of Warren, MN.
Tucker Pederson of East Grand Forks, MN would lead the first two laps of the 10 car Street feature when the only caution of the race flew on lap two. On the restart Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN would pass Jesse Teunis of West St. Paul, MB and Pederson coming out of corner two to take the top spot. Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN and Art Linert of Badger, MN starting seventh and eighth respectively were both working their way to the front. Linert and Johnson would get by Teunis on lap nine, but neither driver was able to challenge Boen for the lead as Boen would go on to pick up his first win of the year. Linert was able to hold off Johnson for second. Heat wins went to Johnson and Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN.
Jared Palm of Warroad, MN would pass Jerome Berger of Badger, MN for the lead on lap five coming out of corner two in the six car Pure Stock feature. Palm would cruise to pick up win number nine for the year, and a sweep of the evening. Berger would cross the line second but was DQ'd for not teching. Cory Peterson of Red Lake, MN would finish second and Ethan Larson of Newfolden, MN third.
Eleven Lighting Sprints took the green flag for their feature and Brandon Johnson of Holt, MN bolted to the lead. One caution on lap six was the only thing to slow Johnson down as he was never challenged on his way to his fifth win of the year and a sweep of the night. It was a good battle between Alan Truscinski and Dexter Dvergsten both of Greenbush, MN for the second and third spot. The two swapped positions a couple of times over the final nine laps but it would be Dvergsten taking the second spot and Truscinski third. Truscinski would win the other heat.
4 Cylinder driver John Current of Wilton, MN would pass Brandon Halvorson of Erskine, MN for the lead on lap two and go on to pick up his third win of the year and sweep of the evening. Halvorson would finish second and Katie Ahrndt of Hawley, MN third.
Up next for the fastest 1/4 track in Northwestern Minnesota will be the "Battle for the Bandit", the Rick Johnson memorial for the Streets with the winner taking home $1,590 for the win. For more info on this race check out our Facebook page at Official Greenbush Race Park. Also racing that night will be the NOSA Sprints along with the Modifieds, Midwest Modifieds, Pure Stocks, and Lightning Sprints. Gates open at 4pm with the cutoff for the draw at 6pm and racing starting at 7pm sharp.
