Greenbush Race Park
Berger gets third Byfuglien Memorial win
It was another beautiful Saturday night of racing for the Wissota PolyDome Dirt Track Series at the Greenbush Race Park, although a short, light rain cast some doubt on whether the program would continue at all. But a great job by the Race Park track prep crew, and to the drivers for some extra track packing, the end result was a fast-smooth track for the nights race program.
The fifth annual Donny Byfuglien Memorial for the Pure Stocks would only send 12 cars to take the green, but it was still one of the better races of the evening. Cory Peterson of Red Lake, MN would sit on the outside pole and lead the first four laps before he spun in corner four. This would hand the lead over to A.J. Lane of Williams, MN and Lane would lead the next two laps before eight-time feature winner Jared Palm of Warroad, MN would pass him coming out of turn four. Palm and Lane would race the next four laps side by side before the determined Lane would take the top spot back on lap 10. Two laps later Jerome Berger of Badger, MN would get by Palm for second as Palm fell back a few more spots. The second caution of the race came on lap 12. Lane would now have to hold off the hard charging Berger. Palm was able to recover and on the restart was able to pass Dusty Caspers of Bagley, MN for third. But on lap 16 both he and Lane would slow on the track bringing out the final caution. Lane was unable to continue and Palm would have to start from the rear of the field. This would hand the lead over to Berger and he would go on the to lead the last nine laps to pick up his second win and third Byfuglien memorial win. Caspers would finish second and Palm would recover to finish third and win his heat. Chad Hagen of Thief River Falls, MN won the other heat
Steve Hougard of Strandquist, MN would sit on the outside pole for the 16 car Midwest Modified feature and lead the first few laps. Three early cautions would make for a slow start to the race but Hougard would hold to top spot until lap eight when second place runner Nate Reynolds of Edinburg, ND would take the lead coming out of turn four, Hougard would take the lead back leaving turn two, but Reynolds would take it back for good leaving turn four. Reynolds would hold his lead even through two more cautions, and Hougard was in a battle for the second spot with his younger brother Hunter of Warren, MN the two siblings raced each other hard over the last four laps, but neither could catch Reynolds as he went on to get his fifth win of the year and a sweep of the night. Hunter Hougard would beat older brother Steve to the line for second. Other heat wins went to Justin Olson of Thief River Falls, MN and Logan Salazar of Neche, ND.
Sixteen Modifieds to the track for their feature and Joe Chaplinski of Middle River, MN would lead them to the green. Chaplinski and outside polesitter Jordan Wahl of Greenbush, MN were in a dead heat when they crossed the line at lap one. Wahl would lead lap two, but Chaplinski would get by Wahl out of turn four to lead lap three. Three laps later Jordan Duray of Halma, MN would pass both Wahl and Chaplinski in three and four to take the lead. Duray would hold the top spot for the next three laps before Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB made the pass coming out of turn four for the lead. Duray would surrender the second spot to Dustin Wahl of Greenbush, MN on lap 12. Caution flew for the last time on lap 17, but Delaine was able to hold off everyone and pick up his first win of the year at the Park. D. Wahl would finish second and Duray would finish third and win his heat. Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN and Justin Bronk of West St. Paul, MB were the other heat winners.
Taylor Jacobson of Roseau, MN and John Halvorson of Warren, MN would sit on the front row of the 13 car Street feature. Halvorson was leading as the field was trying to get lap number two in the books, when he spun in corner four taking out second place Jacobson. Both were unable to continue. This would hand the lead over to Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN and Blacklance would make the most of the opportunity, but Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN wouldn't make it easy. Johnson would never get beside Blacklance, but he was never more than a car length back. Blacklance would go on to pick up his first win in the Street of the year at the Park, Johnson would finish second. Chase Boen of Karlstad, MN and Art Linert of Badger, MN ran nose to tail for most of the race before Linert was able to get around Boen for the third spot with three to go. Heat wins went to Halvorson and Mike Olson of Lancaster, MN.
Alan Truscinski of Greenbush MN would start third in the 12 car Lightning Sprint feature and on lap four would pass leader Presley Truedson of Kennedy, MN in corner two for lead. Truscinski would cruise to pick up his first win of the year at the Park in a caution free race. Truedson would finish second and Eric Johnson of Grand Forks, ND would finish third. Heat wins went to Dexter Dvergsten of Greenbush, MN and Johnson.
Bill Perdonic of Winnipeg, MB lead wire to wire in the caution free 4-Cylinder race. John Current of Wilton, MN was second and Blake Erickson of Bagley, MN was third. Bill Perdonic broke the track record in the feature with a time of 16.633.
