Blacklance, Imrie, and Linert get first checkers of the year at Greenbush Race Park
Gray, overcast and cool skies greeted the 73 drivers that signed in at the pit gate, but with these less than ideal conditions, the rain stayed away and racing went on at the Greenbush Race Park.
It was the second running of the "Dugan" Nelson memorial for the Midwest Modifieds and Aaron Blacklance of Thief River Falls, MN would lead the 20 car field to the green flag and would take the early lead. The first yellow flew just six laps in as Randy Thompson of Lakota, ND spun in corner two. Blacklance would lead following the restart but one lap later a massive seven car pileup on the front stretch would end the night for about a 1/3 of the field. Logan Hamness of Strathcona, MN was taken to local hospital complaining of pain in his lower back. On the restart Blacklance and the rest of the field would rattle off 19 laps of green flag racing, as Blacklance had almost a half lap lead on the rest of the field. The real battle was for the second, third and fourth spots between Zach Dockter of Norwich, ND, Doyle Erickson of Bagley, MN and last year’s winner Gary James Nelson of Blackduck, MN. But the last caution flew with four to go and would put everyone on the bumper of the leader. Blacklance would hold everyone off and pick up his first win and sweep of the year at the Park along with taking home the $1,000 paycheck. Erickson would finish second and Dockter third. Doug VanMill of Bagley, MN Paul Veert of Winnipeg, MB, and Nelson got the other heat wins.
Jeremy Gust of Strathcona, MN would lead a very strong 13 car Street feature to the green flag, but it would be outside pole sitter Art Linert of Badger, MN to take the lead. Linert was followed closely by Ryan Johnson of Karlstad, MN and first time visitor to the Race Park Justin Vogel of Brooten, MN. Vogel would pass Johnson for the second spot on lap four, and then be right on the bumper of Linert for the next six laps when the only caution of the race flew for John Halvorson of Warren, MN but it would be Johnson that was unable to continue as he pulled off with a bad left front wheel. On the restart Linert was able to hold off Vogel and pick up his first win of the year at the Park. Vogel would finish second and another first time visitor Ryan Satter of Dent, MN finished third. Gust and Jesse Teunis of West St. Paul, MB would get the heat wins.
Shawn Teunis of West St. Paul, MB got to lead the first lap of the 15 car Modified feature before fellow Canadian Ward Imrie would pass him in one and two for the top spot. On the second restart of the race on lap six, fifth place runner Dustin Strand of Grand Forks, ND would get by Jordan Duray of Halma, MN and Rick Delaine of Stony Mountain, MB for the third spot. Delaine would return the favor as he passed Strand on lap 12 for the third spot, then two laps later Delaine would pass Teunis for the second spot. But it would be Delaine to bring out the final caution of the race as his car slowed down the backstretch and off the track in corner three and was unable to continue. With four to go Strand would get by Teunis for second. Strand and Imrie have already had a few good duels this year, and it would be Imrie winning this one. Strand would finish second and Teunis third. Delaine would win his heat with other heat wins to Aaron Holtan of Newfolden, MN and Shane Wahl of Greenbush, MN.
14 cars would take the green for the Lightning Sprint feature but before they all got out of corner two, Steve Hildebrand of Steinbach, MB went for a wild ride flipping a couple of times before landing hard. Hildebrand was also complaining of lower back pain and was transported to a local hospital. When the race resumed it was Brody Hutton of Manvel, ND leading wire to wire and caution free to pick up his first ever Lightning Sprint feature win. Eric Johnson of Grand Forks ND, along with Alan Truscinski and Dexter Dvergsten both of Greenbush, MN picked up heat wins.
Cory Peterson of Red Lake, MN would lead the first three laps of the 10 car Pure Stock feature before getting passed by Jerome Berger of Roseau, MN. On lap five Darryl Heintz of East St. Paul, MB would end up on his roof in corner one. Winner of the last three Pure Stock features, Jared Palm of Warroad, MN would have to start from the rear for changing a tire, but on the restart would charge from last place to second and begin to chase down the leader Berger. Palm needed every single lap as he passed Berger out of corner four coming to the checkered flag to get his fourth win. Berger and Dusty Caspers of Bagley, MN would pick up the heat wins.
