Inside Line Promotions – SWEDESBORO, N.J. (Sept. 14, 2014) – Alex Bright accepted a rare challenge last Friday during the ARDC Midgets event at Grandview Speedway.
Bright, who had won three straight ARDC races and leads the series with five total victories, was slated to start on the pole of the main event after winning his heat race.
“We were good in our heat race and pretty much checked out,” he said. “I got an offer for a $600 bonus from somebody if I started 12th and won. We’ve been good and I felt like I could do it. I started up front the last couple of races. You don’t really learn much when you start up front and win. We wanted to go for it and see what we could do.”
Bright lined up on the outside of the sixth row for the 25-lap main event.
“I got a good start and got up to eighth or ninth on the first lap,” he said. “By lap seven or eight I was up to seventh. Then the car that I had just passed ran it in real hard and spun me out. I was turned around backwards before I got to turn one.”
That forced Bright to restart last approximately one third of the way through the main event.
“If I wouldn’t have spun out I would have had a shot at contending for the win,” he said. “After I got spun out I had a shot at a top five and definitely a top 10. In about two or three laps I passed about four or five cars.”
Unfortunately, Bright was caught up in another crash midway through the feature.
“On Lap 12 somebody blew up and laid oil on the track,” he said. “A car two cars in front of me spun out and I had nowhere to go. I ended up hitting him and that ended our night.”
Bright wrapped up his weekend on Sunday at Bridgeport Speedway driving a wingless micro sprint for Greg Stevens. Bright started the 25-lap feature on the outside of the front row after charging from sixth to second place in his heat race.
“I pretty much stayed in second the entire feature,” he said. “We put a hard tire on. Once we got a long run the car started coming in better. I started to catch the leader. We were about to get into lapped traffic and somebody spun out with about five laps to go. I knew once that happened I had a very slim shot at it.”
Bright restarted second with a handful of laps remaining.
“I held onto second until one lap to go,” he said. “I tried running it in harder than I had the entire race. If the car would have stuck I probably would have won. I had to do something to go for it. To me, second place is the same as fourth. I’m there for the win.”
Bright slid off the track on the final lap and he finished fourth, which marked his 28th top five of the season.
He will return to ARDC Midgets competition this Friday at Path Valley Speedway in Spring Run, Pa.
