Channin Tankersley - Going for ASCS Gulf South Region Championship

After spending last year traveling the country on the ASCS National Tour, Tankersley’s focus is on claiming the coveted ASCS Gulf South Region championship; the same championship that narrowly eluded him in 2009.

The 20-year-old from Highlands, Texas, will go after his first regional title, beginning this weekend with races at Golden Triangle Raceway Park in Beaumont, Texas, on Friday and at Battleground Speedway in his hometown on Saturday.

“It’s really tough down here,” Tankersley said. “It’s almost as tough as the ASCS National Tour, believe it or not.

“There are a lot of great drivers in this region and I suspect some of the national guys will be here this weekend since both events pay $3,000 to win. It’s important to get this season started off with some momentum.”

Tankersley finished second in the ASCS Gulf South standings in 2009, snagging one win with seven top fives and 15 top 10s in 25 races.

But this year is different and Tankersley credits that to spending last season on arguably the toughest 360 sprint car tour in the country.

“Being on the road definitely helped me grow as a driver,” he said. “Constantly racing on different tracks, seeing different conditions and running with the faster guys has helped me out a lot.”

Tankersley, who has four career ASCS Gulf South victories, won an ASCS Gulf South race at Golden Triangle Raceway Park on May 9, 2008.

Last August, he finished second at Golden Triangle Raceway Park and third at Battleground Speedway in back-to-back nights.

Tankersley would like to thank his sponsors, including Griffith Truck and Equipment and Custom Vinyl Designs.
