Just Beachin’ at Georgetown: STSS ‘Blast at the Beach’ Storylines, Stars & Sleepers
Written by Chris Moore
GEORGETOWN, DE – Just Beachin’.
The Bob Hilbert Sportswear Short Track Super Series (STSS) Fueled By Sunoco goes green tonight at Georgetown Speedway.
The 11th annual ‘Blast at the Beach’ takes place tonight at the historic Sussex County oval as the STSS concludes the month of August.
The NJ Quality Drywall South Region returns to action for the first time since July 7, when Bridgeport (N.J.) Motorsports Park hosted the ‘South Jersey Shootout.’
THE STORYLINES
As the month of August concludes, the NJ Quality Drywall South Region is still very much up for grabs, with the top five in the standings separated by just 63 points. The top eight are within 93 points of each other.
Tonight’s 35-lap, $6,000-to-win main event serves as Round No. 7 of the South Region and the 16th round of the Ollie’s Overall Championship.
Walden, N.Y.’s Anthony Perrego leads the South Region standings by 31 points over Saint Catherines, Ontario, Canada’s Mat Williamson. Alex Yankowski (-35), Danny Bouc (-43), and Matt Sheppard (-63) conclude the uber competitive top five.
Sheppard meanwhile leads the Overall Championship by 39 points over Sprakers, N.Y.’s Stewart Friesen and 41 markers over Williamson.
THE STARS
Pipersville, Pa.’s Danny Bouc rolls into Georgetown Speedway with every reason to be confident. Bouc has an STSS win at Georgetown in his career, won the ‘Dirty Jersey’ at New Egypt (N.J.) Speedway earlier this season, and topped the most recent STSS Modified main at Georgetown Speedway on August 1 in the Camp Barnes Benefit Stock Car Race.
Stewart Friesen has been hard to beat in his career in the ‘Blast at the Beach.’ Friesen, including last year’s rendition, has won three career ‘Blast at the Beach’ titles. Throw in his ‘Jake Marine Memorial’ season opening triumph this season and there’s every reason to believe in the Halmar No. 44.
While the STSS has laid dormant since August 7, it’s hard to forget the last time the tour was in action. Matt Sheppard went two-for-two in series action at Mohawk International Speedway (Akwesasne, N.Y.) and Cornwall Motor Speedway (Ontario, Canada). Sheppard also won the ’22 ‘Blast at the Beach.’
THE SLEEPERS
The driver sitting sixth in the South Region standings is still very much in play for a championship run as well. Neshanic Station, N.J.’s Ryan Krachun sits 77 points out of the championship lead. Krachun does hold a Georgetown win to his credit in ’23 and is still in search of his first career STSS triumph.
Lady luck has not been on Billy Pauch Jr.’s side on the ’24 STSS tour. The good news for the Frenchtown, N.J. driver is he’s a two-time ‘Blast at the Beach’ winner. The ‘Kid’s Kid’ will look to flip the fortune around at a race that has treated him well.
Federalsburg, Md.’s Austin Hubbard has seen his ups and downs in the Modified ranks in his career. Those ups include strong performances in STSS shows in Southern Delaware. Hubbard will look to add those performances with a strong in the ‘Blast at the Beach.’
ALSO IN ACTION
The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman continue their march in the Belmont’s Garage South Region championship.
The competitive championship battle has Ethan Bill one marker ahead of Logan Watt. Joe Toth sits third, 15 markers out of first.
The STSS Crate 602 Sportsman go for 25 laps and a $2,000 top prize.
The Delaware Super Trucks and Delmarva Chargers round out the program.
ON THE HORIZON
The STSS heads back to the River Valley Builders North Region for a $10,000 top prize in the ‘New Yorker’ at Utica-Rome Speedway in Vernon, N.Y., on Sunday, Sept. 1.
Two weeks later, the biggest one of them all takes place at Fonda (N.Y.) Speedway. The $53,000-to-win ‘Fonda 200’ takes place Thurs.-Sat., Sept. 12-14.
