Rodney Sanders lands in Elk City victory lane

By Ben Shelton (Happy, TX) -- Rodney Sanders picked up his 12th win of 2018 on Sunday night in his Wichita Tank Racing #20 DriveWFX.com/ Swan Energy MB Customs/ Hatfield Racing Engine Modified. The Texas racer topped the action at Oklahoma’s Elk City Motor Speedway.

“It was a pretty good weekend for us,” Sanders recollected. “Ryan (Gustin) was just a tick better than us all weekend at I-35 Speedway. He did a great job all weekend. We had speed though, and on Sunday night it was cool to be able to close the weekend out with a win at Elk City Motor Speeday.

Thursday night found Rodney Sanders invading I-35 Speedway (Winston, Missouri) for the opening round of the fifth annual Summit Racing Equipment USRA Nationals. In a field of 24 Open Wheel Modifieds, Sanders passed five cars in his 8-lap heat race to finish second behind Ryan Middaugh.

Earning the seventh-starting position for the opening night feature, Rodney passed four cars to record a third-place finish behind Ryan Gustin and Darron Fuqua with Ryan Gillmore and Dennis Elliott rounding out the Top-5.

The following night, Sanders started the night with a heat race victory, which positioned him on the pole for the $500-to-win A-Main. Dropping one spot in the 20-lap affair, Rodney posted a runner-up finish behind Ryan Gustin with Ryan Gilmore, Cody Simpson, and Dennis Elliott trailing them to the checkers.

On Saturday evening with his spot already locked into the finale, Sanders notched a runner-up finish behind Ryan Gustin in the Pole Dash, locking him into the outside-front-row starting spot for the A-Main. With $4,000 on the line, Rodney held his spot throughout the 50 lapper to register a second-place finish behind Gustin with Darron Fuqua, Ryan Gilmore, and Jake Timm completing the Top-5 finishers.

Sunday night found Sanders in action at Elk City Motor Speedway (Elk City, Oklahoma) for the Winter Nationals. With 15 Open Wheel Modifieds on hand, Rodney locked his spot into the A-Main with 8-lap heat race victory. Rolling off third for the finale, Sanders outran second-starting Cole Traugott to pick up his 12th win of the season. Traugott, Logan Robertson, Kale Westover, and Bobby Mayfield rounded out the Top-5 finishers in the 20-lap affair.

Rodney Sanders will trek west to Las Cruces, New Mexico this weekend – October 25-28 – to compete in the 19th annual Budweiser Fall Nationals at Southern New Mexico Speedway. The $10,000-to-win USRA Modified event, will mark the final race to ever be held at the clay oval.
