Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 6, 2015) – Ryan Smith accomplished his main objective on Sunday at Williams Grove Speedway.

Smith advanced into his first career National Open feature during the 53rd edition of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series event, which had been consolidated from a three-day spectacle to a one-day show because of a rainy weekend.

“It was pretty cool to get in the show and complete all 40 laps,” he said. “That was the goal and we did it.”

Smith kicked off the event by qualifying ninth quickest in his group. That lined him up on the pole of a heat race.

“I had to win that heat race,” he said. “Brent Marks (who started on the outside of the front row) pulled ahead and I waited for him before I started the race. When he lifted I went and got the jump on him. I should have got in front of him. I left him a lane on the outside and he got around me. I tried sliding him, but he got out in front. Clear air is everything. Then I was stuck in the back for the feature.”

Smith’s second-place finish in the heat race locked him into the 17th starting position for the 40-lap main event.

“We battled around 15th for most of the race,” he said. “I made a driver error during a late fuel stop. I stopped by the trailer, but there was a fence all the way down to the flag stand and in turn four. My crew guys had to go all the way around to get to me. By the time they got to me they were blowing the horn meaning there was only one minute to make changes. They only got one half a can of fuel in.”

The engine began to sputter in the closing laps and Smith ran out of fuel on the final lap.

“I coasted to the checkered flag,” he said. “I had to pull it out of gear coming out of turn four. All in all, that was a minor deal. We made the main event and finished all the laps.”

Smith was credited with a 19th-place result.

He will wrap up the UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions season this Saturday at Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio. Smith enters the season finale ranked seventh in the championship standings, but he is only 48 points out of fifth place.
