Wilson Produces Mixed Results During Busy Week to Start Season in Florida
Inside Line Promotions – TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 22, 2022) – Greg Wilson knocked the rust from the offseason off last week when he and the Hercules Tires, Ohio Logistics and DNC Hydraulics supported Seeling Motorsports team invaded East Bay Raceway Park.
Wilson battled to overcome qualifying woes a week ago Monday and Tuesday during FloRacing All Star Circuit of Champions races at the dirt oval.
“We didn’t draw very well and got locked into some pretty stout heat races,” he said. “Qualifying is so critical these days that if you don’t start out on the right note you’re burying yourself. I felt like we had speed and moved forward each night, but we started too far back in the heat races and B Mains because of our qualifying results.”
Wilson ended the opener with a run from 10th to fifth in a B Main and the following night he advanced from 12th to seventh in the consolation race.
Action shifted to 360ci winged sprint cars on Thursday for the start of the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360s.
Wilson finished where he started – second – in a heat race to earn enough points to lock directly into the A Main. He ended the night with a 19th-place result.
Friday’s competition was similar with Wilson placing third in a heat race before he won a B Main to transfer into the rear of the main event. He finished 20th in the feature.
“We really struggled finding grip both nights,” he said. “You could see it with the drivers who had grip, they were able to move forward and get to the front. We just couldn’t seem to get the tires to lock into that sandy dirt.”
The event wrapped up on Saturday. Unfortunately, an early incident in a heat race flattened a tire for Wilson, who restarted at the back of the pack and rallied to place fifth. The night concluded with a third-place showing in a B Main to miss transferring into the main event by only one position.
“It was an unfortunate circumstance in the heat race that took us out and then someone who started in front of me in the B Main didn’t get going right away,” he said. “We fell back to fifth or sixth right away. We got to third and we made up half a straightaway on second place, but we ran out of laps.
“It was a little frustrating. I felt on Saturday we had our car better than we had been and got caught in a bad spot in the heat race and got taken out. But we had speed finally. That made everything feel a little better. When you come to Florida you want to run good. I felt like we fumbled the ball a little bit, but that’s part of racing.”
Wilson plans to join the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series this Friday at Magnolia Motor Speedway in Columbus, Miss., and Saturday at The Rev in Monroe, La.
He will also have a Hercules Tires dealership visit on Thursday at Bates Tire Center in Columbus, Miss., from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
