Sams III Shows Speed During Season Opener and Gains Confidence Heading Into ASCS National Tour Campaign

Inside Line Promotions – TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 17, 2020) – Sams LaMountain Racing enjoyed a solid season debut last weekend during the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360s hosted by East Bay Raceway Park.

Unfortunately, a high pill draw doomed Danny Sams III on Thursday from the start as he lined up last in a heat race. The track didn’t allow for much passing and a run from ninth to seventh place relegated Sams III to a B Main. He hustled from ninth to fifth place, which was one position shy of making the main event.

On a bright note the performance did put the team into the Wetherington Tractor Service, Inc., dash. Sams III took the lead on the start and pulled away for the victory.

“We were getting used to new equipment and we got it dialed in at the end of Thursday night,” he said. “We started behind the eight ball in the heat race. We moved forward, but starting ninth doesn’t do much for you unless you really pass a lot of cars. We ended up one spot out of the transfer in the B Main and then had a great run in the dash. That was a great confidence boost knowing you’re running with a World of Outlaws driver.”

Friday’s program rained out, setting the stage for the finale on Saturday. However, nose wing damage on the start of the heat race hampered Sams III and he ended fifth. The team then rebounded in a B Main by maneuvering from sixth to second place to garner a transfer into the back of the 40-lap main event.

“We started 20th and by the fourth lap I was up to 10th,” he said. “I was slow rolling the bottom while everyone was bunched up. I was able to make a lot of moves early. After a few laps the bottom wasn’t the place to be so I moved up. It was more follow the leader up there. I was able to pass a couple of cars.”

Sams III was up to eighth late in the race when he was involved in an incident on the track. Unfortunately, his car wouldn’t refire on the restart and he lost two laps in the pits before being able to rejoin the race. He ended with a 14th-place result.

“I was super happy with the results,” he said. “We showed we had a very fast car. That gives me a great confidence boost going into Arizona in two weeks.”

The team will be off this weekend before starting the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour season Feb. 28-29 at Canyon Speedway Park in Peoria, Ariz.
