Inside Line Promotions – GIBSONTON, Fla. (Feb. 20, 2018) – Shawn Dancer is no stranger to the Ronald Laney Memorial King of the 360s at East Bay Raceway Park.
Dancer has made the trek to Florida for the marquee event for several years and last weekend he accomplished his main objective – to make the A Main during the finale - despite a tough start to the action.
“We rolled out the car on Wednesday for practice and had the same setup that we used back in Ohio,” he said. “Somehow between that night and Thursday we got things a bit twisted.”
After pulling a high pill on Thursday, Dancer started fifth in his heat race and finished sixth. That relegated him to a B Main, in which a fifth-place result missed a spot in the main event by only one position.
“We struggled on Thursday and we didn’t get much better on Friday,” he said. “We tried some different things, but an even worse pill draw didn’t do us any good.”
Dancer finished where he started – eighth – in a heat race to open Friday’s action. He advanced from seventh to sixth place in a B Main, but fell two positions shy of a transfer.
“On Saturday, we lined up seventh in our heat race due to points,” Dancer said. “They only took the top four from heat races and the track was pretty fast. If you didn’t get them off the start, it basically went into single file.”
Dancer finished seventh in his heat race, which placed him in a B Main. The team made some changes in an effort to get closer to the setup they arrived with on Wednesday.
“We started fourth in the B Main and we had a good battle going for the transfer spot,” he said. “That was our last chance to make the Saturday A Main and we ended up second.”
Dancer’s runner-up result in the consolation race locked him into the 22nd starting position for the 40-lap main event. He battled with a tight car throughout the race, but made progress and gained several positions before a broken front end resulted in a DNF.
“We got up to about 16th, but then the front end broke on Lap 26 and we finished 19th,” he said. “We weren’t thrilled about the week, but to be able to get through our adversity and make our first Saturday A Main at an event like this was definitely worth it.”
