Eagle Valley Speedway
Adams, Brauer, and Koehler all on the High Side
Brad Erickson
Jim Falls, Wisconsin (July 23, 2017) Eagle Valley Speedway presented the best tradition in auto racing with Kid’s Night sponsored by Coca-Cola. All the racecars took to the track after the heats and the kids and kids at heart were allowed to mingle among the cars and drivers. They got treats, pictures, and autographs with laughter stemming from every direction. Once the track was cleared, the features were run with the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, Pure Stocks, and EVS Hornets were all in action. The feature winners on the night were Kevin Adams, Jeff Brauer, Nick Koehler, Ron Hanestad, Tyler Wahlstrom, and Brian Uthe.
The modified heats were won by Kevin Adams and Mike Anderson after both had started in the back row of their respective races. It was a pair of Hesslers on the front row of the feature with Anderson and Adams side by side, directly behind. Adams got the jump and took an early lead and restarted at the point after a quick caution. It was Anderson moving into second on the restart and a mirror image of the classic battle the two held in their last race at Eagle Valley began. Adams assaulted the top side of the race track as Anderson shadowed him in the same groove but a slightly different line.
Anderson moved down lower on the race track and Adams looked better up high. Adams began to stretch his advantage as third running Adam Hensel closed on Anderson. Anderson moved back up the track, regained an advantage over Hensel, and began to close on the leader. Catching Kevin Adams is never an easy task though as Adams blasted through lapped traffic. Anderson did close the distance to a few car lengths but it was Adams impressively to the finish line. Hensel ran a solid third as Justin Oestriech and Scott Duval rounded out a very tough top five finishers.
Tommy Richards won the Super Stock heat as the front row of Troy Fransway and Luke Schultz lead the feature to green. The opening lap saw the field three wide at the end of lap one but soon, Brad Ingram spun to draw the caution. The leader on the restart, Troy Fransway, spun in turn four, collecting Eric Schultz and Tommy Richards, ending Schultz’s night. With Fransway relegated to the rear, Jeff Brauer led them to green on the restart but Luke Schultz had a fine run to move to the point. Brauer used his topside momentum and closed back in and retook the lead as Richards moved into second. Richards fought down low to get under the leader as they crossed under the flag stand side by side when a caution flew for a spinning Lukas Koski and Troy Fransway, ending Fransway’s night.
The green flag saw little delay in the fine battle for the lead as Richards continued to storm the bottom of the track as Brauer drove hard on the high side. Ever so slowly, Brauer inched back out and into control, leading the remainder of the race to the win. Richards was a strong second as Luke Schultz looked very good in third. Koski and Tony Falkner finished in the top five.
Shane Halopka, Jay Richardson, and Nick Koehler, won their Midwest Modified heats and Tyler Werner and Bob Wood owned the front row for the feature. As the green flag dropped, it was Wood to the front and he looked very strong for the first half of the race. Calvin Iverson raced impressively in second as Shane Halopka worked his way to third and eighth starting Jay Richardson moved to fourth. The yellow flag flew as Jason Vokovan spun in turn two, resetting the field. Under green, Richardson didn’t come to speed and faded to the back of the pack before he rebounded and began to accelerate.
The caution was shown for a Denny Cutsforth spin and under yellow, Richardson stalled and was pushed from the raceway. It was Shane Halopka driving from inside row two past Wood for the lead and soon thereafter, Vokovan spun, drawing a yellow. Halopka stayed at the point as Wood and Iverson held row two. The restart saw Koehler enter the picture as he moved to the ultra high side of the raceway. Koehler moved into the top three, overtook second, and blasted into the lead. From there, he never looked back as he impressively drove away from the others on his way to the checkered flag. Halopka came home in second over Iverson as Jake Smith and Michael Truscott used late race passes to secure top five positions.
In the Street Stocks, Braden Brauer won his first heat at Eagle Valley Speedway and Danny Richards added to the extensive collection of his heat wins. Brauer was on the front row with Jacob Hessler but it was second row starting Ron Hanestad moving into the lead coming off turn four on the first lap. Hanestad never looked back on the way to the checkered flag. Hunter VanGilder chased him the entire distance in second as Richards finished in third. Jay Kesan and Travis Hazelton rounded out the top five finishers in the caution free event.
The Pure Stocks heats were won by Dean Pronschinske and George Richards as Cole Hill and Nicholas Hazelton led the feature to the start. The first attempt to go racing was aborted and the second attempt was scarred by a stalling Hazelton. Before the race was underway, the entire front row was eliminated when Cole Hill left the track under yellow. Third starting Dean Pronschinske become the pacesetter and he took the lead early. The ever strong George Richards raced to second, closed on the lead and took the top spot. However, soon after, his car lost a rear when and axle, sending him spinning. Pronschinske was back in the lead for the restart, but is was Tyler Wahlstrom on the prowl as he moved from his seventh starting position to drive under the leader for the point. Wahlstrom led the remainder of the race relatively comfortably as Pronschinske beat Pat Smith in third. Mike Grover finished a fine fourth over Ken Larson in fifth.
The Hornets saw Jason Holte, Dean Butler, and Jason Bauer win heats, and although all were involved in the race for the feature win, none could tame Brian Uthe. It was Uthe from the pole as Butler snuck by to lead lap one. Uthe wasn’t going to have any of it as he moved back into the lead the following lap. Holte moved into third and was involved in a physical battle for position with Kasey Gross. Gross took the third position as Kaden Baldwin pounded the front stretch wall, drawing the caution. It was Uthe in the lead as seven cars drove in a tight pack racing for the second position. Uthe used it to his advantage and drove to the checkered flag for the win. The gaggle for second saw Bauer beat Butler in a drag race to the checkers coming off the final turn. Kasey Gross and Chad Prissel finished in the top five as Derek Krumrie, Scott Westaby, and Dan Prissel finished closely behind.
The Eagle Valley Speedway will not be racing on Sunday, July 30, 2017, but will return on Sunday, August 06, 2017, with the WISSOTA AFCO Race of Champions qualifier. All regular weekly WISSOTA classes will be in action. Thanks go out to the fine sponsors each week, including Oium Blacktop and Kelly Oium Well Drilling and Pump Service who give away a bicycle to one boy and one girl every racing night. They gave away six on this night of racing!
