Saturday’s Test and Tune Gets Racers Ready for Upcoming Season
By Tanner Hollis, Delmar, DE –
Over 40 race teams turned out for Saturday’s Test & Tune. Fans were able to see the AC Delco Modifieds and Delaware Dirt Modifieds show up to get their car dialed in for the upcoming Short Track Super Series race, the Diamond State 50. The Modfieds weren’t the only divisions to take laps around the fast half-mile. Drivers in all classes were treated with a track that provided a smooth, dust free surface and over three hours of hot laps.2020 Delaware Dirt Modified Champion Jordan Watson picked up right where he left off . Watson was overall fastest in all three sessions with a time of 19.457 seconds in session one. Brad Trice joined Watson in being the only two drivers of the evening to break into the nineteen second mark.
The AC-Delco Modifieds had over fifteen Modifieds hit the track. Session’s one and two were broken up into two groups. We saw three different drivers have fast times in each session; Jacob Peoples, Trent Willey and Greg Humlhanz. In session two, fans held their breath when the red flag came out for the 09 after a hard hit into the embankment on the outside of the pit entrance. Fortunately the driver climbed out of the car and was ok.
In the Modified Lites division, the 91 driven by Donnie Spicer had the best time in all three sessions. The 22w, driven by Jimmy Wills was also quick, but times were not available due to the lack of a transponder.
The Rush Late Models took to the track, and Mike Wharton was fastest overall in sessions one and two. Session three Jason Dean had the fastest time in the JD signs number 7D.
Delmarva Chargers, Super Trucks, Little Lincolns and Vintage Cars were also on hand but no times for these classes were recorded due to no transponders.
All eyes are now on the upcoming Diamond State 50 when the top Modified racers in the Northeast descend on Delaware International Speedway . In 2020, we saw the titans of the sport Stewart Friesen and Matt Shepard battle it out at the historic speedway lap after lap. Who will it be this year? We will find out on April 27, who etches their name into the list of winners for the Diamond State 50.
The 2021 points season begins with opening night, “Delmar Night on May 1st.
