CAMP BARNES BENEFIT RACE TO CELEBRATE 45TH YEAR IN 2017

Forty five years ago, business man Melvin Joseph Sr. approached Delaware International Speedway founder Bill Cathell, with an idea he had. Mr. Joseph, expressed how he would like to see, the two of them support a local camp, located in Ocean View, DE. The camp, forever known as Camp Barnes, is located in Ocean View, Delaware.

Cathell agreed, and open his facility up, allowing the Delaware State Police to promote one race a year. The agreement, gave all the proceeds collected that evening, to go direct to the operation fund for the camp. In 1972, the first race was held, forty five years later, the Cathell family and it's staff devote their time and efforts to assist the DSP in promoting an exciting event for race fans and teams across the shore.

In 1947, the Delaware Association of Chiefs of Police, an organization which was composed of active law enforcement and correctional officers, accepted the challenge to undertake a project to combat juvenile delinquency in the first state. A committee was appointed to investigate the problems confronting youth. Its resulting recommendation led to the establishment of Camp Barnes for the recreation of deserving youth from throughout the state.

Camp Barnes is located on Millers Creek, a tributary of Little Assawoman Bay. Since 1947 thousands of children from all over Delaware have had the opportunity to attend summer camp at Camp Barnes. Today, Camp Barnes is open to all children who are residents of the state of Delaware and are between the ages of 10 and 13. Camp Barnes is not a camp for children with behavioral problems and juvenile delinquents. Children attend the camp at NO COST to the camper or their family. The camp is in session from early June until August and accommodates approximately 60 campers per week for six weeks.
