KENNY COOLBETH, JR. WINS “TONY STERLING TRIBUTE 1ST STATE AMA GRAND NATIONAL AT DELAWARE INTERNATIONAL SPEEDWAY
By Charlie Brown, Delmar, DE - A huge crowd turned out for the “Tony Sterling Tribute 1st State AMA Grand Nationals presented by Don’s Kawasaki – Yamaha – Sea Doo of Hallam, Pa. Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway. At the end of the Grand National Championship 1 25-lap feature it was Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. of Center Hill, Fla. standing at the top of the podium. In the 16-lap GNC2 main, Davis Fisher of Warren, Ohio rode to his fourth win of the season and clenched the GNC2 National Championship.
The drama began before the green came out in the GNC1 main. Bryan Smith of Flint, Mich. trailed defending champion Jared Mees of Clio, Mich. by just one point coming into the event. Smith had to go to his backup Kawasaki before the feature and was forced to start last by himself in the third row. As the lights started to come down for the start, Mees jump started and was put to the rear next to Smith.
Kenny Coolbeth, Jr. won the drag race to the first turn on his Zanotti Racing Harley-Davidson with Jeffrey Carver, Jr. on the Don’s Kawasaki tucking into second and Harley rider, Jake Johnson chasing in third. Just before the halfway sign, the caution was out as Sammy Halbert went down in the fourth turn while running in the fourth spot. The mishap was devastating for Halbert’s point race chances. Coming in to the night he trailed Mees by just 20 points but a broken handle bar from the spill would end his night.
Mees got a good restart and was up to eighth by the halfway sign while Smith was mired back in 13th with a broken shifter lever. Coolbeth would pull away to a 1.66 second lead in the second half of the race to take the win. Second went to Carver with Johnson third. Dominic Colindres of Brisbane, Calif. On the only Yamaha in the field and Jared Vanderkooi of Mt. Gilead, Ohio rounded out the top five.
Davis Fisher led flag to flag on his Parkinson Brothers Racing Kawasaki to not only win the GNC2 main but to also clinch the National Championship in the division. Bronson Bauman of Salinas, Calif. rode a beautiful race charging from his 14th starting spot to finish in second on a Harley-Davidson with Dan Bromley of Warrington, Penn. on a Kawasaki finishing in third. Fourth went to Ryan Wells of Albion, N.Y. on a Kawasaki and Tristan Avery of Chesterfield, Va. rounded out the top five on a Kawasaki.
