CURT MICHAEL SURVIVES LAST TURN TANGLE TO WIN IN URC SPRINT CARS
The United Racing Club Sprints cars made their first appearance as a club in several years on Saturday night. The 18 car field was set by two heats with Troy Betts and Robby Stillwagon taking pair. Stillwagon’s first lap in the heat was the fast lap of the night at 16.693 seconds and an average speed of 107.83 mph.
In the 25-lap feature, Tyler Ross in the Eldreth Construction No. 25E took the point with Randy West riding second. The yellow was out on lap six when David Swanson came to a stop and Andy Downs went up in smoke. On the restart, Ed Aiken grabbed the second spot with Josh Weller and Troy Betts rounding out the top five.
By the halfway sign, Curt Michael had worked into the top five from his seventh starting spot and was on the move. Traffic tightened the lead battle and Weller was able to move into the second spot putting the Eldreth cars one-two.
With seven to go Michael dropped Aiken to fourth and with five to go got by Weller for second. Working traffic to perfection Michael took the lead from Ross with four laps remaining. Ross tucked in behind Michael keeping pressure on the lead. On the final lap Ross made one final attempt at regaining the lead. The top pair made hard contact in the third turn with both cars getting out of shape. Amazingly both were able to recover and nurse their damaged cars to the finish line with Michael getting his fifth win of the season. Ross finished in the second spot with Weller, Aiken and Robbie Stillwagon rounding out the top five.
