H.J. BUNTING CAPTURES 5TH WIN IN DELAWARE BIG BLOCKS
The 2011 point season came to a close on Saturday night at the Delaware International Speedway. Closing out the regular season with his fifth win was H.J. Bunting who also finished the runner-up in points to Matt Jester who lost an engine in the qualifying heat but still earned his first championship.
David Van Horn, Jr. invaded and with the six car inversion from the qualifying heats, started on the pole. Van Horn quickly opened a lead with Howard O’Neal riding in second. H.J. Bunting wasted no time charging from seventh and dropped Tim Trimble to fourth on lap three. Two laps later, Bunting worked by O’Neal for second and the chase was on.
By lap nine Bunting had reeled in the leader in lapped traffic. Bunting was on a mission taking the lead one lap later and pulling away in what would end up being a caution free main. At the halfway sign the top five were Bunting, Van Horn, O’Neal, Beau Wilkins and Jamie Mills.
Mills was making headway and took fourth from Wilkins on lap 17. Bunting had opened a full straight lead as Mills took third with five to go. Bunting remained smooth and quick in the top groove and drove to the victory. Mills got by Van Horn for second on the final lap as Van Horn ended an excellent first outing in third. Fourth went to Wilkins and O’Neal rounded out the top five. Heats for the 22 cars were won by Mills and Wilkins.
