Kingsland Tops wild Bus Race - Kath and Cummins Back on Top

Spring Valley, MN - June 20, 2016:  The annual School Bus races and Mascot night took over Deer Creek Speedway on Saturday night along with a full race program. The event was presented by Essig Agency, Ag Power Enterprises, Construction Partnership, BK Millright and Adams Graphix. A big crowd, 105-cars and four school buses put on a whale of a show.

The WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds started the feature action when Michael Truscott and Adam Martinson led the 21-car field to the green flag. Truscott bolted to the early lead with Anronio Pintaro and Robbie Franklin in tow. Ryan Goergen and Casey Jane Trom diced it out for fourth, Franklin got to second and then Martinson stalled to bring out the first caution.

Truscott and Franklin took off on the start while Dan Wheeler made it three wide with Goergen and Trom for fourth. Truscott stuck to the bottom and Franklin took to the high side while they battled for the lead. Jason Born stormed from 11th and was in the top five and Wheeler took fourth. A couple more cautions came out one for a spin Pintaro which ended his good run.

Franklin made some moves on the top and looked to challenge Truscott. In a slick move, Truscott slid up the track and took the line away. Garitt Wytaske was also on the fly from 13th and now entered the top five. Two late race yellows would set up a two lap dash to the finish. Truscott took off a scored the win, Wytaske drove all the way up to second while Franklin broke. Born’s superb run ended in third with Wheeler and Goergen in the top five.

The KIK Graphics & Printing Street Stocks featured another great main event in their 18-lap affair. Fred Prudoehl and Brent Holland led the field to the green flag but it did not last long. The race was yellow flagged for a bad start just as the front row collided and Prudoehl hit the turn one wall. With the front row gone, Bernie Adams and Blake Adams now paced the field.

Bernie Adams took the lead with Nick Schwebach, Blake Adams and Kyle King three wide for second. Blake Adams took the spot and then quickly challenged for the lead. Mike Blowers stormed to third from row five as Blake Adams took the lead. Blowers then slipped past Bernie Adams for second and Kong was now up to third.

Blake Adams and Blowers ran very close for the lead and for several laps raced side by side. Adams a rookie in the division this year looked unflappable when Blowers would pull alongside. Blowers pulled even with the leader while King spun to bring out the yellow. The race resumed and so did the race up front with Danny Richards now in the mix. Blowers snuck past on the final lap and edged Adams for his third win of the season and ninth overall. Adams ended up on second and Danny Hanson snuck past Richards for third and Schwebach was fifth.

Zach Brom and Josh Ihlenfeld led the 24-car field for the start in the Dirt Doctor Trucking USRA B-Mod feature. Brom spun on lap one and triggered a six car pileup in turn two. Kylie Kath would set sail in this one when he took off from the green flag. Jim Chisholm would give chase most of the way. Several yellow flags would slow this race in the early going.

Kath and Chisholm would drive away from the pack but it was Cole Queensland on the hammer. Queensland started in row six, entered the top five on lap four and got past Scott Demmer for third on lap six. Queensland then reeled in Chisholm and challenged for second on lap eight.

Kath ran away from the pack to secure his first win at the track this season and sixth overall. Chisholm, a 13-year old rookie got his second top five in a row with a second place finish. Queensland wound up in third with Matt Jones and Demmer in the top five.

Harland Morehart led the first two laps of the Olympic Fire Protection WISSOTA Super Stock main event. Jeff Brauer and Danny Richards gave chase until Brauer took over on lap three. Danny Richards got to second with his brother Tommy up to third. Jon Jensen would spin and bring out the caution on lap four,

Tommy Richards got to second and took off in an attempt to catch Brauer. Brauer and Richards had a great battle for the lead when they ran door-to-door for several laps. Brandon Duellman got to third when he passed Danny Richards. The battle up front continued on while the laps counted down.

Tommy Richards was scored the leader of lap 16, but Brauer charged past to reclaim the lead in turn two on lap 17. Brauer held on for his third win of the season and has 50-career wins at the speedway. That now ties him with Mike Sorensen for second on the all-time list and leaves him just one win from Bob Timm’s 51-wins. Tommy Richards finished second with Duellman third in his first appearance of the season. Danny Richards finished in fourth and Jon Jensen rallied back to fifth.

Jason Cummins and Brandon Davis got out front of the NAPA Auto Care Centers USRA Modified feature and put on a great show for the fans. They battled almost the entire 25-lap distance and were spectacular through lapped traffic. While that went on up front, a good race for third ensued with Joe Ludemann, Mick Glenn and Erik Kanz. Keith Foss was also on the move and entered the top five.

Cummins maintained the lead but Davis was right there and challenged on several occasions. Cummins made a couple of daring moves through lapped traffic and that opened up his lead. Cummins led the rest of the way for his first win of the year. Davis ran second with Foss in third and Brad Waits was fourth. Ludemann’s fifth place run was voided after he failed to make it through tech inspection which left Glenn in fifth.

The final event of the night was the 10-lap Bus Race finale. Four schools were entered and it was probably the wildest and most bizarre event yet. Kingsland with Mike Hyland at the wheel raced Goodhue and Shawn Ryan for the lead and they made hard contact with the backstretch wall. The Goodhue bus climbed the wall and settled back down to earth with enough damage to end its night. Kingsland was sent to the back for the incident.

Then Grand Meadow took the lead with Wyatt Richardson in control while Greg Lammers in the Blooming Prairie bus close behind. They ran side by side until lap six when they entered turn two. Grand Meadow got up on two wheels and tipped over and Blooming Prairie plowed into the rolling bus. The red flag came out, both drivers were deemed uninjured.

Both buses were crippled in the crash and that left one bus running. That was the Kingsland Knights and Mike Hyland who were declared the winner at that point. It was announced that Kinglsand were the champions for the third year in a row and the crowd went crazy. What a way to end the night and next year’s edition will have a hard time to top that one.
