Mitchell Scores First FUEL Victory, Edwards Secures Series Championship
(Elm City, NC) On a night filled with side-by-side racing and intense late race restarts, Dustin Mitchell denied multiple challengers and kept his new Longhorn Chassis out front en route to $3000 and his first career win with the FUEL Racing Series. While Mitchell withstood a late race challenge from Brent Robinson to secure the victory, Jonathan Edwards was busy wrapping up his first series championship.
In Klotz Synthetic Lubricants Time Trials, Daniel Tucker bested a field of 23 FUEL Late Models to capture fast time honors with a lap of 14.554. Dustin Mitchell and Russell Erwin rounded out the Top 3 qualifiers. In the D&E Marine Top 6 Dash, Mitchell surged to the lead from the outside of the front row and never looked back in capturing the dash victory over Tucker, Erwin, Donald Bradsher, Steve Banal and Austin Holcombe. Jonathan Edwards Jr dominated Hoosier Racing Tire Heat Race #1 while Brent Robinson held off a hard charging Matt Long to earn the win in Heintz Performance Heat Race #2.
In the City Chevrolet Performance main event, Mitchell took command and captured the lead. Daniel Tucker would apply early pressure along with series newcomer Russell Erwin and Donald Bradsher. As the cars raced side by side and sometimes even three-wide, Brent Robinson was mounting a charge from his 8th starting position. Mitchell maintained his lead throughout the race but the action just behind him remained intense throughout the course of the event. Restarts were pivotal throughout the race as everyone inside the Top 10 jockeyed for track position. The final caution emerged with just 4 laps to go, bringing the field back to Dustin Mitchell. On the final restart Mitchell would hold off a final charge from Robinson, Tucker and Russell Erwin to earn the final win of the 2016 FUEL Racing Series season.
Clover, South Carolina driver Jonathan Edwards claimed his first FUEL Racing Series Championship. A detailed look into the champion's season and his thoughts on the 2016 season will be chronicled in a forthcoming press release.
