County Line Raceway
Race Recap 8/18/12
Mother Nature has not been very nice to County Line Raceway this summer, with rains taking home the checkers for several weeks in a row. Luckily, the pleas of the fans, drivers, crews & staff worked as County Line Raceway opened it's gates to everyone to come enjoy a night of racing, as well as the annual Kid's Night Bike Races. With all 5 regular divisions running, all drivers hungry to get back in their cars and all the fans ready to see some great sideways racing, people piled into the pits & stands to spend their Saturday night with all of us.
Nashville Feed Super Stock 4 cylinder division line up for their $800 to win 20 lap special with Brad Hamm & Dustin O'Neal starting on the front row. The first caution would come out for Nevin Twiddy on lap 4 as he looped around in turn 4. Back green with Brad Hamm out front. Returning driver Kevin Pierce held onto 2nd, Dustin O'Neal in 3rd, John Proctor in 4th and Austin Holcombe rounded out the top 5. Two cars would get together in turn 4 bringing out the caution again, but we were quickly back green with no change in the top 5. Kevin Pierce was unfortunately sent to the pits due to severe smoke billowing out of his car as he entered the corners. Driver's behind him could not see very well, and to not only save his equipment but to ensure safety to the rest of the field. After a 2 car spin in turn 2, we were under a brief caution but flagman Eddy Pollard quickly told the drivers it would be 1 to go and we were under green flag conditions. Brad Hamm continued to lead as we approached lap 13 with John Proctor running in 2nd spot trying to close the gap between him & Hamm. Dustin O'Neal, Bill Winstead & Tyler Vaughn rounded out the top 5. Glenn Bottoms would bring out the caution as he experienced some kind of mechanical failure that would relegate him to the pits. Green flag with 3 to go with Hamm leading Proctor, O'Neal, Winstead and Vaughn. O'Neal would lose 3rd spot to Winstead as Vaughn tried in vain to get up in the mix as well. Dakota Whitley would make his presence known as he entered the 3 way battle for 5th spot, and as they crossed the checkers it would be Brad Hamm, John Proctor, Bill Winstead, Dakota Whitley & Tyler Vaughn.
Our next feature event, the Barnes Equipment Late Models with Roger Lucas & Neal Sykes on the front row. Roger would quickly to take the point as Sykes fell into line right behind him. The caution would fly quickly as Randy Lucas spun in turn 4. Quickly back green with Lucas leading Sykes, Spencer Liggon, Cy Nelms and Trevor Peoples your top 5. The caution would come out again for a bang up on the back stretch that started when Cy Nelms got loose, Britches Liles got into him, Liles spun and barely collected the corner of Steve Mendenhall. Mendenhall would suffer a right front flat as Britches would lose all kinds of sheet metal. Both were able to continue and we were back green. Lucas, Sykes, Liggon, Nelms & Peoples the top 5. Bobby Bottoms was all over the bumper of Peoples, trying to get around him as Cy Nelms got around Spencer Liggon for 3rd spot. Bottoms made the pass on Peoples on lap 6, but they would continue to race hard for their position, as Neal Sykes would take the lead from Roger Lucas. JP Cascell would loop around on the back stretch bringing out the caution on lap 12. Back green with Sykes still out front, putting some distance between him & 2nd place Lucas. Lucas would have his own battle going on as Cy Nelms was on his bumper. Bobby Bottoms moved up into the 4th spot, Trevor Peoples looking comfortable in 5th. Steve Mendenhall would work on Peoples for about 2 laps before getting around to get back up into the top 5 as we came up on lap 20. Neal Sykes was on a rail, putting at least a straightaway between him & 2nd place Lucas. Neal Sykes would continue to lead the remaining laps bringing home his first win of 2012. He was followed by Roger Lucas, Cy Nelms, Bobby Bottoms & Steve Mendenhall.
Rolling out onto the track for their 15 lap feature, the ARCO Restoration Pure Stock 4 division with Brent Atkinson on the pole with Bobby Crawford on the outside pole. Michael Webb would quickly get around Crawford to take over 2nd spot while Thomas Holbrooke got around him as well. Brian Andrews would take to the high side to attempt to get around Crawford & Jeremy Benson, but couldn't maintain the position before the caution came out for a solo spin in turn 2. Back green with Atkinson, Webb, Holbrooke, Crawford and Andrews your top 5. Andrews would quickly get around Crawford as would Jeremy Benson. Another caution on lap 7 would slow the field, but after a quick yellow, we saw the green again with Atkinson leading Webb, Holbrooke, Andrews & Benson. As we came to the half way mark, JP Brantley would start peaking under the 88 of Jeremy Benson, trying to get into the top 5 while the top 3 engaged in their own battle for that top spot. Webb was all over Atkinson trying to get around him, but couldn't complete the pass, giving Holbrooke the opportunity to gain a little ground on that 2nd place spot. A wreck in turn 4 would halt the field as we were under caution again. Back green with 3 to go and Atkinson trying to hold off Webb. Brent would be able to hold onto the lead to bring home his 2nd win of the 2012 season. He was followed by Michael Webb, Thomas Holbrooke, Brian Andrews & Jeremy Benson.
Next up, the Rapid Red Racing Supply Thunder & Lightning division with Cool Hand Luke Owens on the pole beside Mark Boykin. A spin in turn 2 would bring out the caution, but we were quickly back green. Michael Batten got around Owens for the lead but would spin out of 4 on his own giving the lead back to Owens. Mark Boykin would take over the 2nd spot followed by Cy Nelms Jr, Lane Proctor and Michael Lamm. Lap 7 would see another caution for a 2 car spin over in turn 2, and after a quick clean up, we were back green. Luke Owens continued to lead Mark Boykin, Cy Nelms Jr, Lane Proctor & Michael Lamm. Boykin would lose 2nd spot to Cy Nelms Jr as well as 3rd when Lane Proctor got around him. Boykin fell into line in 4th spot in front of Michael Lamm. Another 2 car spin in 4 would slow the field on lap 9, but we were back green with Owens still leading the field. Michael Batten had worked his way back up through the field after an earlier spin to get up to 4th spot just as the caution flew on lap 15. Back green, Owens, Nelms, Batten, Proctor & Skeeter Liles breaking into the top 5. A 4 car wreck in turn 2 would bring out the caution again on lap 17. After a lengthy caution, we were back green with 3 to go. Owens, Nelms, Batten, Proctor & Liles. Green, white, checkers folks with Owens, Nelms, Batten, Proctor & Liles. Luke Owens would bring home his 3rd win followed by Cy Nelms Jr, Michael Batten, Lane Proctor & Skeeter Liles.
Our final feature of the night, the PL Woodard PSV8 division would line up for their 15 lap feature. Gary Whitely & Phillip Lamm would start on the front row followed by a stellar field of drivers. A 4 car crash would stop this 16 car field on lap 1 as one car spun and the rest followed suit. Anthony Silveri would take a hard hit in the door but would exit the car on his own power. After a lengthy red flag, we were back green with a complete restart. Phillip Lamm would get around Whitley for the lead bringing Ronnie Owens with him to take over 2nd. Jeff Stott charged to the front to challenge Jerry Williams for 4th but couldn't get around him as the caution flew again with 5 laps complete. Back green, Lamm, Owens, Whitley & Williams the top 5. The caution would come out again for a slow car on the backstretch coming to 3 to go, slowing the field once again. Back green, Lamm holding off a challenge by Owens for the final laps to bring home his 2nd win of 2012. He was followed by Ronnie Owens, Gary Whitley, Jerry Williams & Jeff Stott.
