Central Missouri Speedway
August 22, 2020
For Immediate Release
(Warrensburg, Missouri) The season is nearing the end at Central Missouri Speedway (CMS) as the track begins a consecutive run of special events over the next several weeks through the final event of the year at the inaugural B-Mod Blowout.
The POWRi War Sprint League made their way to CMS for their first-ever appearance as 21 drivers signed in for the non-winged sprint racing. Joining the sprints were 12 A-Mods, 15 B-Mods, 17 Mod-Lites, and 16 Pure Stocks for a total of 81 cars.
The fans on hand took in 11 preliminary heat races and five main events. Championship track points were on the line for A-Mods, B-Mods, Mod-Lites, and Pure Stocks while the POWRi sprints competed for their series points. Prior to the night beginning CMS officials announced that the Pure Stock $500-to-win special event was re-added to the schedule to take place on Friday, September 25th during night one of the B-Mod Blowout.
Pure Stocks Recap, Heat Races: D.J. Barnes moved from fifth to the checkers to claim the opening Pure Stock heat with Scott Pullen second. Jason Ryun cruised to the heat two win as Jonathan Evans came away in second. Feature: D.J. Barnes and Jason Ryun earned the front row starting honors for the 15-lap Pure Stock main event as Barnes grabbed the early lead with Ryun in tow. Yellow flew early as Barnes led the charge through lap six. As the leaders came around at lap seven, it was Ryun who took command dropping Barnes to second. Evans was on the move once again as he took over second from Barnes at lap nine. James Mirts also moved forward into third by lap 11 with Spencer Reiff making his way to fourth as Barnes slid to fifth. In the waning laps, Ryun kept a solid distance between himself and Evans and ultimately went on to collect his third victory of the season. Evans was stout in second with Mirts third, Reiff fourth and Barnes fifth.
Mod-Lites Recap, Heat Races: David Raffurty raced his way to the opening Mod-Lite heat race with Garrett Stonum in second. Salina, Kansas driver Justin Kinderknecht made a rare CMS appearance in his Mod-Lite and started off with the heat two victory with Ed Griggs second. Feature: David Raffurty and Kinderknecht took pole honors to start the feature for the Mod-Lites. Raffurty and Kinderknecht were virtually even coming to the line for lap one as Raffurty was scored the leader. When they came by a second time, it was Kinderknecht who took the top spot. A yellow flag flew early as Dillon Raffurty nearly spun with Donnie Dannar unfortunately getting the worst end of the incident as he was unable to continue on after contact with Raffurty, who experienced a flat left front but was able to safely continue. Kinderknecht continued his lead up front building on the distance with each green flag lap. After a long green-flag run, father and son, David and Dillonn Raffurty waged a classic battle for second right to the finish as Kinderknecht sailed to his first CMS win of the year. David Raffurty edged his son Dillon for second, Ed Griggs ran a strong fourth the entire distance with Garrett Stonum fifth.
B-Mods Recap, Heat Races: Jacob Ebert ran a smooth race to take the opening eight-lap B-Mod heat with Friday night Lakeside Speedway winner Patrick Royalty in second. Chad Status fought hard for the heat two victory narrowly edging Jeremy Lile. Feature: After a quick restart, Jacob Ebert established himself at the front of the field with Chad Status and Patrick Royalty inside the top three. Yellow flew over the field early on two occasions, but after that, there was a long stretch of green-flag racing. Ebert maintained a comfortable lead while Status and Royalty battled for the runner-up spot. By the halfway marker, Royalty moved to second, but Ebert built up a nearly full straightaway advantage by late in the race. Not even a late-race caution could keep Ebert from victory lane on this night as the multiple-time B-Mod champion captured his first win of the season as he continues to fight for the season championship. It was Ebert’s 46th career CMS win. Royalty finished second in front of a stellar run by Sturgis Streeter up to third. Jeremy Lile was fourth with Status rounding out the top five.
POWRi War Sprints Recap, Heat Races: Wesley Smith of Nixa, Missouri started off the sprint heats with a victory over Anthony Nicholson. Tom Curran of Kansas City motored to victory in heat two over Kyle Lewis while Quinton Benson led the way in heat three ahead of Jack Wagner. Feature: Wesley Smith and Quinton Benson began the 25-lap sprint main event from row one on a slick and fast track with Smith out to an early lead. By lap nine, Smith led Riley Kreisel and Benson inside the top three. The racing was fantastic inside the entire top five for several laps and by lap 15, Smith still led but Benson moved to second over Kreisel. The race completely changed dynamics two laps later when Kreisel’s night came to a halt on the front stretch after climbing the wall, which ended in two flat tires to end his bid for the win. On the restart, Smith led Benson, Tom Curran, Anthony Nicholson, and Jack Wagner. One more caution flew in the race with Smith still leading Benson and Curran. Over the final laps, the leaders masterfully made their way through lapped cars but in the end, Benson of Sweet Springs emerged as the victor with Smith second, Curran third, Anthony Nicholson fourth, and Wagner fifth.
A-Mods Recap, Heat Races: A-Mods finished off the heat race action with a pair of eight-lap events with Terry Schultz besting Dean Wille in heat one while Gunner Martin outran Chad Lyle for the heat two win. Feature: In what may go down as the feature of the year at CMS, the A-Mods, although light on cars on this night, did not disappoint when it came to the racing. With the track super slicked over and racy from top to bottom, Chad Lyle and Terry Schultz led the charge at the drop of the green flag with Schultz bolting out to an early race lead. The lead duo stayed incredibly close for nearly the entire race duration as Schultz took the high road and Lyle took the low road. Tim Karrick looked strong in his return to action as he ran solidly inside the top five. As Schultz held a narrow lead, Wille began to move in on Lyle for second and by lap 15 took the position with a low-side move, then setting his sights on Schultz up front. Lapped traffic came into play by lap 17 as Schultz did all he could to keep Wille behind him. Schultz, Wille, and Lyle ran close to the end as Wille moved to the front by lap 23 but Schultz was not done yet and held his own on the high side. Coming to the white flag the leaders were side-by-side all the way until the end as Schultz’s bid for the win was slowed by a lapped car off turn four with Wille claiming the victory from his fourth starting position in a strong run to the front as he placed his #68 where it needed to be at the right time. Schultz was second followed by a strong return to racing run to third by Karrick, a solid run to fourth for Kevin Blackburn, as Lyle slipped to fifth.
Next up, August 29, special event with the Third Annual Street Stock Showdown, featuring $2,000-to-win Street Stocks in a 25-lap main event.
