Carson McCarl – Joining Dad as Jerry Richert Memorial Champ!
(Bill W) September 14, 2016 – Carson McCarl drove Jeremy Scadden’s #6 to their second win of the 2016 season Saturday night with the UMSS at the Jerry Richert Memorial at Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wisconsin. The win meant a McCarl has won four Jerry Richert Memorial main events (father Terry has three), and was the highlight of a good weekend for the Altoona, Iowa driver, who also posted seventh and eighth place finishes in Princeton, Minnesota Friday and at Badlands Motor Speedway in South Dakota Sunday. The team plans on running this Saturday night at the Park Jefferson Speedway near Sioux City, Iowa with the Nebraska 360 Sprint Series and MSTS.
The team visited the bullring in Princeton Friday with the UMSS series. “I hadn’t been there since my Dad ran there in 2008 with the World of Outlaws,” says Carson. “I’ve never really raced on anything that small before. We ran third in our heat, and the car was working well. We started fourth in the Qualifier and we were running fourth. I messed up and misjudged the speed of the dude in front of me. I got up over him and spun out. That knocked us out of the Qualifier.”
Carson started outside row seven in the feature. “It rained for a good five or six minutes before we pushed off,” he says. “I was hesitant at first. I didn’t know how hard to push it and I didn’t want to make any mistakes and ruin the car for the rest of the weekend. We were pretty good. Most of the cars were on the bottom, but me and a couple others were on the top in one and two. We were passing some guys down there. We ended up seventh. It was fun. I wish I wouldn’t have messed up in the Qualifier, and we could have started further up.”
It was time for the Jerry Richert Memorial at Cedar Lake Saturday. “Cedar Lake and Huset’s are my favorite tracks,” says Carson. “I’ve only been there a couple times, but we’ve run well and had fun. We were fast all night. We went from sixth to second in the heat, and seventh to third in the Challenge race. The top four redrew and we drew the four. I wasn’t too worried about it. We had been so fast all night.”
When the feature green flag flew, Carson was ready. “I got to second right away, and I felt good,” he says. “We were running the bottom, and we got (Ryan) Bowers down there. I felt good down there, especially off of four. There was a lot of juice down there. I knew (Brooke) Tatnell and those guys were going to be ripping the top and they were coming. I knew I had to get up there and make some speed. It was a good race. Tatnell threw me a pretty good slider with about five to go. He was clean about it and we were able to keep the lead and get the win. It was a good time.”
The team finished up their weekend Sunday at Badlands. The draw saw a heat that included Carson’s father and Clint Garner in front of him. “I’ve been drawing good up there all year,” says Carson. “I knew a subpar draw was coming eventually. Doing the math, I figured I better get up to third and make the show. I think Sunday was maybe the toughest competition we’ve had there this year. We were able to get to third.”
The run did qualify Carson for the redraw. He started the main event fifth. “There was a good bottom and it was super-slick up to the cushion,” he says. “Those guys were running the top in one and two, but I was catching them on the bottom. There was a red late in the race and I had just got (Aaron) Reutzel and (Dusty) Ballenger for sixth. I was gaining on Ian (Madsen) a little bit and the red came out. Aaron got back by me. We were decent, but I went to the top a couple of laps and didn’t feel great up there. I made a couple mistakes later on and we finished eighth. It was a good learning experience running the bottom a little bit. Usually, I’m ripping the top. It was good.”
