Johnson scores at Canyon Speedway Park

By Tony Steele (Peoria, AZ) -- RJ Johnson piloted his Bobby Martin owned Sands Chevrolet USAC Southwest Sprint Car to victory lane on Saturday night as CSP honored the memory of Steve Stroud. Dustin Washburn was able to capture the Dwarf Car feature win in a wild Green-White-Checker finish while Josh Rivera took home the victory in a race that was decided by one tenth of a second. Cody Center brought home his second feature win in a row at CSP while

Sixteen Sands Chevrolet USAC Southwest Series Sprint Cars checked in to the season opening non-wing event at Canyon where RJ Johnson started off his title defense in dominant fashion. Stevie Sussex jumped out to the early lead in the 30 lap feature, making his way by pole sitter Michael Curtis. Johnson filed into second place and jumped on a mistake by Sussex in the early portions of the main event. RJ would jump out to an almost five second lead to finish off the race, leaving Sussex to hold off Charles Davis Jr. Michael Curtis would cross the finish line in fourth with Tye Mihocko recovering from an early crash to finish in the fifth position.

In a debate for who put on the race of the night, the Dwarf Cars put on a show full of two and three wide racing throughout their entire feature event. It seemed for a majority of the feature that David Teves would walk away with a feature win, but late cautions proved to write a different story. A bobble by Teves allowed eight place starting Dustin Washburn to get by coming to the white flag. As the lap was completed a car spun on the frontstretch set up a one lap shootout. Washburn started from the point on the restart and held off a hard charging Teves who could not recover from his late race mistake. Rusty Degroat would wind up in third with Cory Brown and Greg Jewett finishing out the top five.

In the other nominee for race of the night, Josh Rivera was able to recover from a late race mistake to capture the win in the Western Modlites feature, besting CSP victory lane regular Brenden Priest by a tenth of a second. As Rivera and Priest raced towards the white flag, a bobble by Rivera opened the door for Priest to get side by side. The duo raced hard down the backstretch and once again were equal through the final corner. Rivera would nip Priest by a nose at the line, taking home the win. Collin Bender would take the third spot with Jim Hock and Steve Bender rounding out the top five.

With more mechanical failures for defending champion George Fronsman, the door was wide open for another new feature winner in the Allscapes IMCA Stock Cars. Cody Center slammed that door closed as he took home back to back feature wins at CSP. Center found himself in victory lane during Round 4 of the Winter Challenge, and once again took home the feature win at the Steve Stroud Memorial. Dennis Losing would come home in the runner up position with Vance Honea in third. Brian Hatlestad and Georgie Fronsman would round out the top five.

Joe Vlasity has now been held winless for two weeks in a row after taking home the first three races of the year in 2018. Bradley Stafford made a late race pass on race leader Joe Vlasity, earning his first win on the season in the Desert Restorations IMCA Hobby Stocks. Stafford and Vlasity battled side by side as the race closed in on completion, with both gaining the edge at one point or another. Stafford would hold on in front of Vlasity, Chuck Thornton, Max Zachrison and Allen Hakes. The point season is scheduled to begin for Hobby Stocks and Stock Cars at the CSP Howler on February 24th.
