Ortega to Return to ASCS Southwest Competition
Derrik Ortega is excited to be back behind the wheel of a sprint car at the end of the 2017 season. Following a back injury in May at Arizona Speedway Bob Ream Jr. will not be returning to the seat but he would like to see the Ream Racing #8 GF-1 sprint car finish out the three remaining races in the ASCS Southwest Region Season. Bob and Derrik have a long history together starting in the late 90’s when Bob invited a young Derrik to sit in his car in the pits after winning a race at Manzanita. They became friends in 2009 when Kelly Denison took a road trip with the Ortega Racing Team to Manzanita and invited Bob out to help the crew as well.
“We have worked on each other’s cars multiple times over the years, but this is an exciting and different opportunity,” Derrik said of the upcoming races. Derrik has always driven a family owned racecar and after downsizing to micro sprints has not piloted a sprint car since October 2012. His last sprint car race was at Canyon Speedway Park, where he started on the front row alongside Bob Ream Jr. They raced side by side for the top spot multiple times during the race and ended up claiming the top two spots.
With five regional ASCS wins between the Rocky Mountain and Southwest regions and the 2008 ASCS Rocky Mountain Rookie of the Year and Championship to his credit Derrik is confident that this team has what it takes to be competitive and give him the opportunity to run up front.
