Inside Line Promotions – MINOT, N.D. (Aug. 22, 2017) – It has been quite a while since Jason Sides has competed at the two tracks that are on this weekend’s schedule for the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series.
Sides will return to Black Hills Speedway in Rapid City, S.D., for the first time since 2011 on Friday for the Rushmore Outlaw Showdown before venturing to BMP Speedway in Billings, Mont., for the first time since 2008 on Saturday for the Big Sky Brawl at Billings.
Sides has set quick time during qualifying at BMP Speedway the last two times he has competed at the track, including establishing the track record in 2005.
“I’m excited to get back to both tracks,” he said. “We’ve had good success at BMP Speedway. It’s always fun to go back to a track and see the fans when you haven’t been there in several years. This should be a great weekend.”
Sides is coming off a World of Outlaws tripleheader in North Dakota that began last Friday at River Cities Speedway in Grand Forks, where he set quick time during qualifying. He then won a heat race and placed second in the dash to start the main event on the outside of the front row.
“We were on the outside a few times on the restarts,” he said. “It was a little slicker versus the bottom was good and wet. One or two cars would get by and slide me into turn one. I’d get a little tight. The further I got back the worse it was. I just didn’t run the top hard enough and I biked it one time. The next thing I know I’m back there in ninth or 10th. Since we started on the front row we didn’t free up enough and that hurt us.”
Sides held on for a 13th-place finish.
He returned to action on Saturday at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, where he qualified ninth quickest, placed third in a heat race and ended 12th in the A Main.
“We ended up hot lapping three times because the track was so wet,” he said. “We went out for qualifying and were second quick. The later cars went out the better the track got.
“In the A Main everyone ran into the first corner and it was wet. A couple of guys got by on the outside when everyone dove to the bottom. At that point it was wide open around the bottom. We had a restart and I went from 11th to seventh in that first corner because a bunch missed the bottom, but the red came out so we had to go back to 11th for the next restart. After that the race was non-stop and there was no passing.”
The weekend wrapped up on Sunday at Minot Speedway, where Sides timed in 11th quickest. He then placed fourth in a heat race to start the main event on the inside of the sixth row.
“They watered the track just before our feature,” he said. “Everybody hot lapped for several laps to roll the track in, but it was wet and heavy, too. In the heat races you could run up on the cushion. I tried it and it got so tight. My car biked and went off the track. I got back on the track in last and got what I could.”
Sides was running 10th when he slid off the track. He rebounded from last to post a 16th-place finish.
