Wednesdays With Wayne- Back in The Midwest!

After a strong showing in Washington, Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing team have been working their way back to the Midwest with the Lucas Oil ASCS Series. The Oklahoma City driver has racked up a pair of top fives and four top tens the last couple of weeks. Tomorrow night, ASCS will tackle the Park Jefferson International Speedway north of Sioux City, Iowa. Wayne will be putting the 410 in for a couple of nights. Friday, he’ll be at the Jackson Motorplex for the NSL Barb Wieskus Classic and Saturday, he will compete at the Badlands Motor Speedway near Brandon, South Dakota. Sunday, ASCS will be competing at Badlands.

The series visited Gallatin Speedway in Belgrade, Montana on July 8 and 9. Friday night, Wayne had a good run going. “We were running third there in the feature,” he says. “We had a restart with a few laps to go, and the right rear started going down. We ended up fifth. That took us out of a locked-in spot for Saturday.”

He came back, made the redraw and started fifth in Saturday’s finale there. “We were able to get up to second,” says Wayne. “I screwed up there and got passed. We were going to run third and coming off of two down the back straightaway, we blew a right rear tire out. We ended up coming back to tenth.”

Wayne competed in a special non-sanctioned event the weekend of July 16 at Billings Motorsports Speedway in Montana. “We were quick time the first night there, and we rained out,” he says. “The second night, we were fifth quick. They inverted the heat races, and we ran fifth in that. We didn’t make the redraw, so we started the feature ninth. We tried some things we had been wanting to try, and it was horrible. We ended up backing up.”

Last weekend, ASCS visited the Black Hills Speedway near Rapid City, South Dakota. “We were racing for third in the feature on Friday,” says Wayne. “A lapped car got me and I ran over him and backed into the fence. We went to the back. On the restart, the car right in front of me, who was dead last…it looked like he was going to go below the cone. Well, he saw the cone at the last second and made a right hand turn right into me. That destroyed me. We didn’t lose the car, but we lost a lot of stuff.”

The team bounced back for Saturday’s finale. “We were good in the heat race (fifth to first),” says Wayne. “We drew the five again. We missed the setup a little bit. We weren’t very good really. We ended up sixth in the feature.”

Wayne ran in weekly 360 action at Badlands on Sunday. “We were able to go from eighth to third in the heat and were the high point car,” he says. “We drew the nine for the feature. We were able to get up to fifth on a rubber-down track. We were really good though. We were passing cars up until the rubber came down. I think Logan Forler was the only guy we got by after it became a parade, but we were good.”
