Inside Line Promotions – ATTICA, Ohio (March 28, 2017) – Teenager Justin Adams is ahead of the learning curve in sprint car racing after just one race.
Adams made his 305ci winged sprint car debut last Friday at Attica Raceway Park, where he quickly proved he can handle the powerful machine.
Last year he was a rookie in the 600cc micro sprints, but managed to score five wins, earn Rookie of the Year honors and score a track championship. However, Adams and his family felt moving into a sprint car with more power would take more time to get used to. So the plan was for him to start at the tail of his first handful of races, log laps and get comfortable. During Friday’s sprint car debut, Adams adjusted very quickly and nearly made the A Main his first night out.
“I was really nervous at first,” he said. “When we first fired the car at home the noise and heat was unbelievable compared to the 600. As soon as they threw the green for hot laps I slowly started to get faster and faster. In our heat I was still a little nervous yet borderline excited. By the time we pushed out for the B Main I was ready to go out and have some fun.”
Adams started at the back of his heat race and finished eighth, which sent him to the back of the B Main. He picked up a pair of positions to finish sixth – only one spot out of transferring into the main event.
“Being on the lead lap all night, being the alternate for the feature and loading the car in the trailer the same way we rolled it out on Night 1 feels like a win,” he said. “I got more and more comfortable every time I hit the track.”
Adams said working with his crew – his dad, Jason, Andy Younker, Garry Bowman and Chris Bryan – and getting the car to handle better was a huge learning experience.
“Andy, Chris, Garry and my dad worked their butts off for me,” he said. “We were tight all night until the B Main. We struggled to get forward bite, but we will figure it out. I have to thank my dad and mom, my grandparents, Craig and Les Mintz, Kevin Shammo and Andy Potter, and everybody else who helped me and my dad get this car ready to race before we even got to the track.”
Adams is scheduled to return to action this Friday at Attica Raceway Park.
