Fuller returns to victory lane at Airborne Park. Lussier nabs sixth win

PLATTSBURGH, NY—Tim Fuller won Wednesday’s special, 30-lap feature for the Be Cool Heating, Cooling and Refrigeration 358 Modifieds at Airborne Park Speedway for the second time this year, narrowing Mike Mahaney’s points lead in the headline class.
George Foley and Tanner Siemons led the field to green with Foley taking the lead in turn three for the first time with a deep drive into the corner. He powered out on the cushion to seize the top spot from Siemons and lead the opening lap. Fuller used the outside lane to rocket around Chris Raabe in turn one and secure the 5th position going into lap two with Foley out front over Siemons, Steve Bernier and Jordan Fornwalt.
Bernier slipped past Siemons soon after and by lap five was side-by-side with Foley for the lead. At the same time, Fuller moved by Fornwalt for 3rd. Three laps later, Fuller passed Foley for 2nd with Bernier leading by half-straightaway or more. Fuller ran him down in something of a replay of the August 29 race with Bernier on the bottom and middle and Fuller ripping around the top. At the halfway point, Fuller had the lead.
Points leader Mike Mahaney was mired back in 9th for most of the race with valuable positions between him and Fuller. A caution with three laps to go for Matt Woodruff was just what the doctor ordered for Mahaney, who used the restart to vault from 6th to 3rd, behind Fuller and Bernier. Chris Raabe was 4th and Justin Stone was 5th at the checkered flag.
Following the win, Fuller has pulled within 10 points of Mahaney heading into the final two weeks (9/12 and 9/19) of points for the modifieds.
The J&S Steel Sportsman feature was won by Donovan Lussier. Jonathan Toohill and Caleb Durgan had the front row for the 30-lap affair with Durgan taking the early lead. Toohill fell victim to contact on lap two which turned into a multi-car incident. Jamy Begor, Fire Swamp, Beau Reeves, Vince Quenneville and Pat Miner, among others, were all involved. On the restart, Durgan pulled away with the lead briefly, until Michael Wright rocketed past on the top. A lap later, he’d move down to the bottom and begin driving away. Fourteenth starter Travis Bruno was quickly up to 7th, cruising around his favorite lane on the top.
He sized the lead from Wright on lap 17, looking good on the outside lane still. Wright moved back up the track and challenged Bruno multiple times for the top spot, but could not move back in front. At this time Donovan Lussier had moved into the top five on the bottom, and as the top side went away, Lussier moved by Bruno for the lead with two laps to go, securing his sixth win of 2024. Bruno was 2nd with Durgan 3rd, Wright 4th Evan Roberts 5th. Points leader Joey Scarborough was 7th, putting Lussier just four points back heading into double features for the sportsman this week.
The 9th State Cannabis Renegade feature was won by Tylor Terry for the seventh time this year, not to be outdone by Lussier and his six wins with the sportsman. Terry started 9th and took the lead on lap 14 from younger brother Josh Terry. Nate Guay was 2nd with Shawn Duquette right with him for 3rd. Josh Terry was 4th and Shawn Fountain was 5th, scoring his best result of the year. Tylor Terry moved within 12 points of Duquette in the title chase with the win.
Young Cale Manor, from Ellenburg, won the Moore Recycling Mini Stock feature. Manor started 8th and patiently worked his way into the top five early. In front of him, Joe Warren, Kyle Botala, Jamie Whitney, Jr., and Josh LaPorte, Sr., were putting on an excellent display of racing for the top spot. The track was practically blocked in front of Manor with the three-wide racing for the top positions. He took advantage of a restart around halfway, which calmed things down. Manor took the lead on lap eight and did not look back, scoring the win over LaPorte., Sr., and Rick Doner. Kenn Tourville and Speedy Bresette completed the top five. Ryan Senecal was involved in a multi-car crash on the frontstretch, rendering his car unable to compete. He surrendered his once large points lead to Speedy Bresette. Senecal is six points out in 2nd position now.
Cody Young, from Chazy, made his fist trip to Egglefield Ford Victory Lane with a mini-stock B-feature win at the end of the night. Young held off Jeremiah King and Haiden Bordeau.
