Three-way tussle for Renegade title

One Airborne Park Speedway regular-season event, the Mike Watts Memorial presented by Aaron’s and Xplo EZ Sto, remains to determine the 2014 Airborne Renegade champion and it’s crowded at the top.

Jamy Begor of Mooers Forks (634 points), Robert Gordon of Milton, Vt. (633 points) and defending champion Lance Rabtoy of Fairfax, Vt. (628 points) will have a heat race and a 30-lap feature in which to battle for top honors.

Begor won two Street Stock titles in 1997-98 and came close to winning more than one Tiger Sportsman/Limited Late Model championship. In his first Renegade season at the wheel of the Plattsburgh Paving/Huntley Trucking/Ellenburg Auto Parts No. 19, he has three wins and 11 top-5’s. Last Saturday his 5th-place finish required passing four cars in the final 10 laps.

“I’ve been the point leader going into the final race two or three times and come up short,” Begor said. “I feel fortunate to be in this position. You just try to make the right decisions and if it doesn’t work out, you take your hat off to the fellow that beats you.”

Gordon is the all-time Key RD Trailer Sales Renegade win leader (19) at Airborne, but he’s still chasing his first championship. Driving the H2O Well Drilling/Premier Paving No. H2O, Gordon has four wins and 11 top-5’s this season. He staged an epic battle with Begor in the MX Fuels/Gordon Oil 100 earlier in the month that Begor won by inches after 20 laps of door-to-door racing.

“I’ve been second several times,” Gordon said. “To have a chance to win at the end is all you can ask for. You’ve just got to beat them. Try to win the race – it’s all you can do. Lance (Rabtoy) is still in the mix. The heat races will really matter.”

The Renegade heats are eight laps and earn drivers 5-4-3-2-1 points for positions 1-5. All cars taking the green in a heat earn a minimum of one point. The handicapping system sets the line-ups and it’s likely that two of the three title contenders will paired in one of the heats.

Post time Sunday is 1 p.m. Also in action – the Ernie’s Discount Tools Modifieds, J&S Steel Sportsman Modifieds and Busch Mini Modifieds. Admission is adults/$12, kids 12 and under free.
