PERU — Skip Liberty, 48, of Pleasant Street, Peru, died Monday, June 16, 2014, in his race car garage where he spent countless hours, surrounded by his loving family and friends.

He was born in Plattsburgh, Nov. 7, 1965, the son of Lawrence and Glenna (Beshaw) Liberty. He grew up in Plattsburgh and attended Beekmantown High School. He worked for Dame's Rental in Plattsburgh for nearly 30 years.

Since Skip was a young man he had a passion for racing. His racing career spanned 26 years in various classes. He raced at Airborne, Thunder Road, Devil's Bowl, and tracks in New Hampshire and Canada. Skip built his race cars from the ground up. Many were astonished to see what the finished car was after knowing what he started with. Throughout his racing career he received the Ken Squires Award, Track Champion Award, and was crowned Sportsman of the Year.

Survivors include his loving wife of 16 years, Charlene "Char" (Reeves) Liberty, whom he married Nov. 22, 1997, in Plattsburgh; children, Monique Turner and husband Richard of Milton, Vt., Jeremy Devins and his wife Christine of Keeseville, Jessica Taylor and her husband Scott of Schuyler Falls, and Jamie Blake and partner Melissa; grandchildren, Nate, Harley, Connor, Jacek, Keegan, Jaycee, Skippie Lynn, and Kylee; his mother, Glenna Liberty of Peru; mother-in-law, Donna Reeves of Plattsburgh; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Lorrie and Al Mills of Clintonville, and Melody and Tracy Stevens of Plattsburgh; Char's siblings, Wayne and Darcia Reeves, Susan and John Bradley, Kim Devins, and Christina and Joe Guido; close friends, Toby Ebersole and his wife Tracy; Rick Nephew, Dorren St. Germain and her husband Terry; Hank Hutchins, Cathy Drake and Howard Stoner, and Patrick and Diana Premore; many nieces and nephews; and his animals, Yugi, Brutis, Doxie, Chichi, Rusty, and Peanut.

He was predeceased by his father; aunt, Susan Blahut; and father-in-law, Arthur Reeves.

A celebration of his life will be held beginning at Noon Sunday, June 22, at his race car garage, 640 Pleasant Street, Peru.
