David v. Goliath in Eight-Race Modified “Bonus” Events at Airborne

For Immediate Release APS-040514-2

PLATTSBURGH, NY – There will be an open-wheel civil war at Airborne Park Speedway this summer. The historic race track will provide the coliseum as two divisions of Modified stock car gladiators converge in a battle at more than 100 miles per hour during an eight-race showdown.
Drivers and cars from the DIRTcar-sanctioned Modified class will be eligible to race against teams from the NASCAR-sanctioned Sportsman Modified division in a set of eight “bonus” feature races throughout the summer season. The races will be run as a supplement to the regular 11-race DIRTcar Modified schedule at Airborne and will allow that division’s star competitors to race every week at their home track.
The races will be run in addition to regular events for the weekly Sportsman division, and are scheduled for May 17, May 24, June 14, June 21, August 2, August 16, and during the two-day Asphalt Modified Nationals on September 5-6. Drivers will collect NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Championship and New York State points during the bonus features, although those races will not have an impact on track championship points.
Drivers from the DIRTcar Modified division will be eligible to run with either their regular equipment or with a Sportsman car; DIRTcar Modifieds will be fitted with a track-issued carburetor restrictor plate to create parity with the Sportsman cars during the bonus races.
“These bonus races are going to be very interesting for our fans,” Airborne Park Speedway general manager Sherm Hamel said. “It’s a real David versus Goliath situation, and there are some serious bragging rights on the line. It will be very exciting if a young Sportsman driver like Nick Heywood or Jamie LaFountain can defeat the DIRTcar veterans like Todd Stone or Leon Gonyo. There’s also a huge amount of NASCAR points to be gained, which could really shake things up in New York State and even nationally.”
Airborne Park Speedway’s 61st season opens on Saturday, May 3 at 6:00pm. Airborne Park Speedway is located on Broderick Road in South Plattsburgh, NY, one mile from Exit 36 on Interstate 87. For more information, call (518) 647-4444 or visit www.airborneparkspeedway.com.
