Strand steals the show to kick off the 18th John Seitz Memorial

GRAND FORKS, N.D. (September 5, 2024) – Dustin Strand’s incredible year got even better on Thursday night at River Cities Speedway for the Prelude to the Johnny, featuring the fourth annual Howie Schill Memorial and the NLRA Late Model season championship.

It looked as though race-long leader Michael Greseth had the field covered in the closing stages of the Cirrus Aircraft WISSOTA NLRA Late Model feature until Dustin Strand found his groove on the low side of the speedway. Strand slowly inched his way closer to Greseth on the wide, slick and smooth high-banked quarter-mile, pulling alongside the three-time and defending NLRA champion with two to go. Strand and Greseth ran the entire circuit door-to-door before Strand rocketed to the point coming to the white flag.

With lapped traffic on his nose, Strand carefully maneuvered around the Bullring one final time to come around and take the checkers.

The win was Strand’s first Howie Schill Memorial title. The event traditionally has been contested as a two-day show at Red River Valley Speedway in West Fargo, but six inches of rain leading up to the event forced the postponement and relocation to River Cities.

The stats kept stacking up for Strand as the win was also Strand’s ninth of the year overall at River Cities, his 18th in a Late Model and his 21st win overall this season. The East Grand Forks, Minnesota driver currently sits second in the WISSOTA National point standings and collected his fifth career NLRA series championship.

Tyler Peterson led all 25 laps of the WISSOTA Modified feature, holding off Ward Imrie and Dale Ames at the checkers. Cayden Schmeling and Jordan Duray completed the top five.

Cole Greseth won the Big Al’s Construction WISSOTA Street Stock main event, featuring the Dirt Race Central Street Stock Tour, from the front row in a relatively uncontested 20 laps.

Greseth never checked out, but was never seriously challenged from second place runner Braden Brauer of Eyota, Minnesota. Greseth withstood a pair of restarts to go on and win over Brauer, Parker Anderson, Hunter Carter who drove from 22nd to fourth, and Seth Klostreich.

The win for Greseth was his first with the Street Stock Tour.

Ninth-place starter Matt Schow picked his way through the field during the Happy Harry’s Midwest Modified feature just to have the left rear wheel come off a half lap after taking the lead from Blake Adams.

The incident immediately drew a caution and Adams regained his spot in the lead while Schow was hooked up to the wrecker and done for the night.

With just six laps remaining, Adams put his No. 40 machine on cruise control after taking the green flag as he went on to take the win. Twelfth-starting Aaron Blacklance came home second, followed by Reise Stenberg who went 19th to third. John Halvorson and Austin Hunter rounded out the top five.

185 cars were signed in for action on Thursday night. The John Seitz Memorial continues Friday and Saturday.
