Copp, Sabraski, Benson, Jorgensen, & Johnston Score Wisconsin Mod Nationals Wins

SUPERIOR, Wisc. (05/27/22) - After an interminable wait racing finally got under way at the Gondik Law Speedway. Even then practice and Day One of the Annual Wisconsin Modified Nationals fell to the rainy weather.

Qualifying races for all five divisions included thirteen heat races and a pair of B Features for the WISSOTA Midwest. They had the highest car count of the event with 38 cars. (See Results for Heat and B Feature winners).

After a brief period to tune up the track surface it was time to begin the feature events. First up on the four-tenths mile banked oval was twenty-four WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds led to the green flag by a pair of #17's driven by Ashley Mehrworth and Zac Benson. An incident on the initial try resulted in a complete restart. The second try with no laps recorded saw the Benson, Mehrworth, Joey Wagemon and Corey Mehrworth pull away from a boiling pack of cars that could only result in an incident. The second caution flag with a single lap complete resulted in a DNF for William Moelter's #87. Amongst those escaping from the wreck were Cody Carlson, Corey Mehrworth and Kenny Kincaid.

At the restart the two 17's led off followed by Jamie Davis, Cody Carlson, Ryan Savoy, Kincaid and Colin Chaschuk. Caution flag number three occurred in turn four leaving Kennedy Swan with the right side of the #18s up on the wall. Two
other cars were also involved. After the third restart things seemed to settle down as the two 17's went back to their duel while Davis restarted third with Carlson close behind. The top four stabilized with 17 to go while there was some action behind them as Brandon Merhworth, Savoy, Wyatt Boyum up in the top ten from 20th and Chaschuk battled for position along with Jason VandeKamp in the #95. All of that came to a halt when caution period four occurred. Benson lined up in the lead on the restart with Ashley Merhworth second, Carlson third, Davis in fourth and VandeKamp fifth. On the restart Carlson found an open space and shot by Ashley to second and set out after Benson but was unable to find a way by and had to settle for second. Ashley Merhworth, Brandon Merhworth and VandeKamp rounded out the top five. Four made it past Tech but VandeKamp's car was found with something amiss and was Disqualified moving Boyum up to fifth.

Number two, the feature for the Super Stocks lined up on the grid for their 25 lap feature with Terran Spacek, who's been hot this season and Shane Sabraski who is always tough whatever he is driving , on the outside. Like the Midwest Modifieds, the green flag started lap one and the yellow stopped it when Jase Lien was spun at the bottom of turn four. The restart saw Sabraski move to the lead followed by Spacek, Kyle Copp, DJ Keeler, Les Duellman and Scott Lawrence. And, like the Midwest Modifieds, caution #2 flew on lap two as a car was turned around in the same spot as Lien. The restart saw Sabraki establish his dominance as he drove away from the pack. Only Copp had a chance and he could not reel in the fleeing #7A. Then it became a battle between Keeler and Duellman with Matthew Larson and Dexton Koch in the mix. The fourth caution flag occurred in turn four with several cars involved. Sabraski maintained his lead at the restart with ten laps to go over Copp, Duellman and Keeler. Caution number five appeared when John Garrity stalled in turn four. The restart came with eight circuits remaining, again in turn four. Seven laps to go at the restart with Sabraski untouchable in the lead and Copp second Duellman third, Keeler fourth and newcomer Matt Deragon from 13th to fifth. Sabraski went on to finish the event for the win with Copp a strong second, Duellman third Deragon fourth and Koch fifth.

Little did the fans know that we were going to witness a rare 30 lap feature run for the WISSOTA Modifieds. Twenty-Four cars comprised the field for the event. At the green Johnny Broking bolted to the lead with Dad Bob Broking in tow from the second row. They got the jump on Brandon Copp but he quickly recovered and split Father and Son up with a quick move to second. This order in the top three held for a while. Andy Jones, Brandon Dolman, Mike Anderson, etc were battling each other while trying to run down the leaders. Suddenly Johnny Broking's #45J slowed, dropped to the inside of the track and slowly drove to the pits out of the event. This left Brandon Copp the lead and he wasted little time solidifying it as he opened a gap over Bob Broking. Jones got past Broking to second and he set out to run down Copp with slow progress. Showing up in third was Shane sabraski who moved to third from the seventh starting slot. The front of the pack stayed the same but further back there was some good racing. As the racing continued on with a couple laps remaining Sabraski finally got by Jones to second but too late to and had to settle for second. Brandon Copp was the winner on his home track, Sabraski, who has manny wins on the Gondik Law Speedway finished second, Jones was third, Bob Broking fourth and Clayton Wagemon finished fifth. The rare event witnessed by the fans? Thirty Modified feature laps with NO caution flags!
The evening was finished up by Pure Stock and Hornet features. In the Pure Stock main event "team mates" Cory Jorgensen and Aaron Bernick filled the front row and made sure no one else held the top spot. Cory led the first lap, then Aaron took over and led until there was three to go when Jorgenson took over for his third win of the "22 season. In the battle all the way but unable to lead a lap was Dylan Shelton. He was unable to lead a lap but did manage to wrest second from Bernick. Nate Rose and Anthony Woodhull rounded out the top five.

In the Hornet feature Mac Johnston managed to hold off AJ House and Kyle House (Cousins) for second and third while Carter Mathews and Jesse Turnvall rounded out the top five.

Gondik Law Speedway returns to weekly racing next Friday June third.
