Schill Claims NLRA Finale during Prelude to the Johnny; Strand Claims Fourth Series Title

RIVER CITIES, N.D. (09/05/20) - The 23rd season for the NLRA Late Models came to a close on Thursday night during the Prelude to the Johnny at River Cities Speedway with a season-high 50 teams checked in.

Lance Schill, who made his return to Late Models in 2020, scored his first career NLRA win and his second Late Model win at River Cities Speedway of the season.

Schill brought the 27-car field to the green flag for the 25-lap $1,492-to-win main event. After a couple of early cautions, Schill took command of the race lead and built up a comfortable advantage.

Schill found himself mired in heavy lapped traffic at the midway point of the race, which allowed Joey Pederson and Aaron Turnbull to close in.

With nine to go, Schill was having trouble getting around lapped traffic. Pederson drove around Schill to take the point, but just as he did a lapped car spun in front of Schill and Turnbull to bring out the yellow.

The last completed lap showed Schill as the leader which put the No. 17 back out front for the ensuing restart.

Pederson pulled alongside Schill in turns one and two on the restart, but couldn’t muster up the speed to drive by him again. Schill withstood the pressure while Turnbull took second.

Schill went on to claim “the biggest win of his career” as the Langdon, N.D. driver put it in RydellCars.com Victory Lane after the race.

Turnbull, 2020 NLRA series champion Dustin Strand, Jeffrey Massingill and AJ Diemel rounded out the top five.

“This is pretty awesome,” said Schill. “It’s been a dream (to win the Seitz Memorial), there’s not a better race or a better memorial for a better guy. Just to be a part of it is awesome. Then for my wife to draw us the pole... I was just going to try to run it as hard as I could.”

With the third place finish, Strand wrapped up his fourth career NLRA series championship.

“This year was obviously a little messed up with the shorter year. We only ran about half the races. But we race with a good group of guys and it’s an honor to win this deal,” said Strand after the race.

Matt Schow led all 20 laps in the Happy Harry’s Bottle Shop WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature. Schow, who started on the pole, had fellow front row starter Jory Berg right in his wheel tracks throughout the entirety of the race. Both drivers drove the extreme low side of the speedway.

Heading into the final set of corners on the last lap, Schow clipped the infield tire in turn three, upsetting the race car. Schow got squirrly exiting the corner, which allowed Berg to close in. Berg made heavy contact with the rear of Schow coming to the checkers, spinning Schow across the finish line.

Berg beat Schow to the finish line, but Berg was charged for the caution in a yellow/checkered finish, giving the win to Schow and relegating Berg back to 19th. Jamie Dietzler was scored in second.

Aaron Blacklance led early in the Big Al’s Construction WISSOTA Street Stock feature, however a left front steering component failure ended his night early. That led to a battle for the lead between Jonny Carter and Dustin Ebensteiner.

Carter took the lead and opened up a five car length lead. Kyle Dykhoff took the second position from Ebensteiner and looked to close in on Carter.

Carter was too fast, however, as he cruised to the victory.
