Broking Banks Border Battle Bucks From 9th Row

SUPERIOR, Wisc. (06/30/19) - After heavy morning thunderstorms dumped over 2.5 inches of rain at the Gondik Law Speedway and subsequent all day track prep, the second night of the Great Lakes Border Battle driven by G-Style Transport got under right on time with another great field of cars in all five divisions plus the much anticipated Canada Day Dash presented by Bay Lock & Security was on the schedule as well.

After heat and consolation action concluded the Pure Stocks were up first for the second night in a row and James Vendela took command from the outside of the front row and never looked back en route to his first ever Border Battle championship. Jeremy Cash gave chase and ended up with a solid second place finish with pole sitter Dylan Shelton third, opening night winner Jared Akervik fourth and Trevor Treviranus rounding out the top five.

The Midwest Modified feature was on deck and saw Mark Kangas and Shane Halopka on row one with Halopka getting out front early and leading the first segment of the event while 4th starting Jason VandeKamp and 5th starting Skeeter Estey moved into put pressure on Kangas for the runner up spot. Estey got by into the runner up spot, while Jamie Davis, who started 7th was making progress on the outside. Davis found the middle groove to his liking and passed cars with ease to move into the top spot, which he would hold to the checkered, winning by 2.25 seconds over Estey. First time Gondik Law Speedway visitor Corey Storck raced from 8th to an impressive third place finish with Kangas and VandeKamp rounding out the top five.

The Late Model main was next with Kyle Peterlin and Pat Doar sitting on the front row. Doar took the lead at the start with Peterlin, Darrell Nelson and John Kaanta embarking in a battle for the runner up spot early. Doar drove away quickly as Nelson worked by into the second spot and set his sights on a weekend sweep. Nelson charged after Doar as the pack circled the Gondik Law Speedway lap after lap with Nelson carving into Doar’s advantage. Nelson began to pressure Doar for the lead as the duo worked through lapped traffic and after several side by side laps, was able to edge ahead en route to his third straight Border Battle Late Model feature victory. Doar came home second with Kaanta third, Don Shaw fourth and Jesse Glenz fifth at the finish.

The race of the weekend was the $3,000 Modified main event which had tons of storylines throughout the 30-lap event. Ashley Anderson and Mike Anderson lead the field to green from the opening row and over the course of the first dozen laps, the central Wisconsin duo ran side by side, only inches apart and only hundredths of a second apart at the start finish line with 4th starting Shane Sabraski in hot pursuit. The trio ran in a tight pack for the first half of the race, while 17th starting Johnny Broking and 23rd starting Dan Ebert were charging into the top ten. After a mid-race caution bunched up the field, the Anderson’s and Sabraski again set off from the field with Jody Bellefeuillle and Broking now in a tussle for fourth. Broking had his Lethal Chassis glued to the bottom of the speedway and was making up ground quickly as the leaders were still thrilling the crowd up front. Ashley Anderson finally broke free from Mike Anderson out front as Broking appeared in third. Johnny continued to work the bottom and stole the second position with just a handful of laps remaining. As the leaders were shown the white flag, Anderson still lead but Broking took a look under him as they entered turn one for the final time. They drag raced down the back stretch and as Anderson raced toward the checkered on the top of the speedway, Broking again dove low and made a wild last corner pass for the win. Ashley Anderson came home second with Mike Anderson third, Sabraski fourth and Bellefeuille in fifth.

The Canada Day Dash, which pitted the top 7 American Midwest Modified drivers against the top 7 Canadian Midwest Modified drivers in a special 15 lap race determined by lap times was a great one. It saw Brandon Copp jump from the pole into the lead early and paced the field over the first half of the race while Skeeter Estey, who started 9th and Jason VandeKamp, who started 11th were quickly making their way through traffic. Estey got to second and VandeKamp to third when the second caution of the race flew with just a few laps remaining and, on the restart, VandeKamp drove through the middle and split Copp and Estey to take the lead, which he went on to hold to the checkered for the $650 payday. Copp was second with Estey third. Tommy Richards came home fourth and the highest finishing Canadian was Colin Chaschuk, who came home fifth.

In the final event of the weekend, Jake Smith wired the field for the second straight night in the Hornet main event to sweep the weekend in his #21. Jake started on the pole and drove off from teammate Carter Rieland for the victory. Rieland finished second with Nate Servaty coming home in third. Tyler Kachinske and Tyler Schramm rounded out the top five.
