Karting returns to Talladega Gran Prix
Karting returns to Talladega Gran Prix September 7-8, 2024.
Five years ago, the notion of returning to Talladega was tossed around. After discussions off and on with a sizeable sanctioning body, the whole plan fizzled out. Christy Kendall always remembered that idea. Since then, Kendall has implemented a plan, signed a contract, and secured dates at the Munford, Alabama, race track.
“I live in Mississippi and have found many Road Racers south of the Mason-Dixon line. Daytona and Roebling Road in Savannah, Georgia, are our only road racing events in the Deep South. Talladega Gran Prix is an ideal option because it is easy to get to and set up for, regardless of whether you are a hardcore Sprint Racer or a Big Track Road Racer. At just a bit over 1.4 miles, it's fast and sweeping and offers plenty of runoff and amenities. It's still challenging for die-hard road racers and laydown karts of all classes. Talladega checks many boxes, making it attractive to a large spectrum of kart racers. This is the perfect track to include all Sprint and Road Racing drivers and their equipment. Make a few minor modifications, and you are racing and competitive!
We had a test date at Talladega and were impressed with the track's surface. It is very smooth and fun to drive. It was like seeing an old friend! I think our racers are going to enjoy this place!”
The Talladega Gran Prix event will be sanctioned by the American Kart Road-Racing Association (AKRA), the largest kart racing sanctioning body in the United States. AKRA provides sanctioning for their National Championship Kart Series in collaboration with Dart Kart Club’s Road races at the iconic Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course, Nelsons Ledges, and PittRace. Also governed by AKRA are races with Woodbridge Kart Club at Summit Point Motorsports Park and now 3 regional races—two with the Mid-West Karting Association at Lake Afton, Ks. The third Regional event comes on the AKRA schedule Septemeber 7-8 with Karting the Coast and Talladega, Gran Prix.
Talladega Gran Prix is a very well-equipped facility with a 38-48 foot track width, ample paved pit and tree-shaded paddock, Indoor restrooms, showers, RV Pit parking with hookups, free tent camping, and a great observation area with a clear view of the track. A host hotel and discounted daily rate for the weekend will be announced soon.
