Burks sweeps USAC Midwest Wingless Sprints at I-35 Speedway

By I-35 Speedway PR (Winston, MO) -- Racing at I-35 Speedway on August 15, 2020 was a night of firsts. First time winners in the Pure Stock, E Mods, and USRA A Mods. On a night the racers were honoring the late racer Cletus “Mudcat” Murray a couple of winners felt he was riding with them to victory lane.

The Pure Stocks opened feature time on the super smooth track with the heat race winners, Brandon Dixon on the pole and Matthew Matsukevich on the outside front row, bringing the field to the green. Claiming his first win of the 2020 season Matsukevich brought home the win by consistently hitting his marks on the track.

The Midwest Racing Association Non-Wing Sprints were the second feature of the night. Wyatt Burks, Ty Hulsey, and Dom Droud were the heat winners and thus the top three starters for the feature event. Burks grabbed the lead from the drop of the green. A caution on lap 7 bunched the field but Burks pulled away and masterfully handled lapped traffic to take his second win of the year at I-35 Speedway.

Following the Sprint Cars were the E Mods. Heat race winners were Kameron Hanes, Casey Burnett, and Jace Whitt. Blake Bland though was second in passing points as he started 7th in the heat and finished second which provided him the outside front row of the feature. Bland used this starting position to seize the lead and cruise to his first career win!

John Willard claimed his ninth Sport Compact feature of the year with a fast closing Joseph Mick claiming second.
Kerry Davis and Tommy Cordray won their heat races in the Midwest Limited Late Models. They finished first and second in the feature with Davis claiming win number 11.

Here come the USRA classes. The first USRA class was the always exciting B Mods. Shadren Turner and Tyler Cadwallader won the heats and brought the B Mod field to the green. Turner captured the lead into turn 1 with Cadwallader in second. Current point leader Nic Hanes settled into third. A race with only one yellow, Turner claimed his third straight USRA B Mod feature win.

USRA Stock Cars were the next to last feature of the night. After heat race wins, 2019 Track Champion Jeff Dixon and USRA current National Stock Car Point Leader Doug Keller brought the field to green. Keller seized the lead. The battle was for second between Dixon, Gary Donaldson, and JJ Baumli. These three drivers were sometimes three wide out of the turns. Keller cruised to the checkered, with Dixon second Donaldson third and Baumli in fourth.

The USRA A Mod heat races were won by the Johnson Brothers (Houston and Austin). However, starting outside the front row was Kyle Covert who was second in passing points as he started seventh in his heat and advanced to second earning the second most passing points. At the drop of the green two battles developed, Covert and Houston Johnson for the lead and Austin Johnson and Chad Clancy for third and fourth. These battles continued for several laps. Eventually, Covert pulled away earning his first I-35 Speedway win with Clancy in second, Austin Johnson third, and Houston Johnson in fourth.

Next up is Trenton Coca Cola and Central Auto Racing Boosters Night at the Races on August 22, 2020.
