DAVE HESS JR SNEAKS BY BRYCE DAVIS COMING TO THE WHITE FLAG TO EARN THE BIGGEST WIN OF HIS STORIED CAREER IN THE $20,000 "BILL EMIG MEMORIAL" PRESENTED BY SUNOCO FOR THE HOVIS RUSH LATE MODEL FLYNN'S TIRE/GUNTER'S HONEY TOUR AT LERNERVILLE

June 20-22, 2024 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
(Sarver, PA)... The Hovis Auto & Truck Supply RUSH Dirt Late Model Series presented by Born2Run Lubricants took part in the 18th annual “Firecracker 100” with the “Bill Emig Memorial” presented by Sunoco Race Fuels with support from Joseph J. Olivia Attorney at Law for the sixth straight year at Lernerville Speedway Thursday through Saturday. Despite oppressive heat and thunderstorms around each day, the event was completed as scheduled. Fifty-four teams from six different states turned out for the Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series event that was also live on FloRacing and Dirt.TV. A huge crowd turned out for the massive event presented by Big River Steel that featured three nights of Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series competition including $50,000 to-win on Saturday night.
Dave Hess, Jr. has amassed more than 360 victories across numerous divisions in his storied career, but none bigger than on Saturday night. Hess started the 50-lap "Bill Emig Memorial" from sixth, passed three-time event winner Max Blair for second on lap 44 then snuck under 2017 Series Champion Bryce Davis coming to the white flag to win $20,000 plus the championship diamond ring valued at $7,000 from D&V Jewelers! It was the first career Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series victory for Hess, who became the fifth different winner to celebrate in the Landrum Performance Springs victory lane in six races this season. The 50-lap feature went caution-free in 16:39.763.
"That was awesome racing with those guys and honestly was the most fun I've had in a really long time if not in my entire career," acknowledged the 39-year-old Waterford, Pa. driver. "And that's after running a crate car which a few years ago I would have told you there was no way I'd get in one, but I'm glad I did and it was a blast. I gave this thing everything it had. I just kept digging and digging, but man everyone was fast. It was a fun race track and fun race and I'm just glad I could get it done."
Following the Dave Poske's Performance Parts "Feel the RUSH" 4-Wide Salute, Davis went third to first to lead the opening lap before pole-sitter Ryan Montgomery nosed ahead to lead lap two. The two former Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series Champions continued their side-by-side battle on lap three with Davis getting back by. Davis quickly pulled away on lap five as fifth starting Max Blair closed in on Montgomery.
As the laps continued caution-free, Davis caught lapped traffic on lap 11 and had nearly a three-second lead on Montgomery. Blair caught up to Montgomery on lap 15 and the duo raced side-by-side on lap 17 with Blair moving to second; however, Blair now faced a deficit of 3.483 seconds. Hess began to enter the picture when he drove around points leader Brock Pinkerous for fourth on lap 20.
Davis was mired in heavy lapped traffic on lap 23 and by the halfway point, Blair began to close in. Hess made a three-wide move with a lapped car to get by Montgomery for third on lap 26. Hess slowly began to reel in the lead duo and by lap 38 it was a three-car race for the lead. Blair was hounding Davis and tried to move up to the top on lap 44, but that opened the door for Hess, who slid Blair in turn four for second.
Hess then went to work on Davis. Hess was all over the leader on laps 47 and 48. Some contact was made on lap 48 as Davis maintained the lead. Then on lap 49, Hess got under Davis in turns three and four and grabbed the lead with the white flag waving. Hess pulled away on the final lap and took the checkered flag first by 0.793 seconds in the Anderson Motorsports Stables-owned, Close Racing Supply/Plyer Entry Systems/Furniture Towne/Martin Dynamics/Amsoil/Base Race Fuels/Sanger Investments-sponsored #44. Hess became the 45th different winner all-time on the Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour.
"Those guys were all giving me room, but everyone knows in a race like this it will get aggressive when it needs to," explained Hess. "I had a blast racing with those guys and appreciate them racing me clean. I saw two to go and honestly didn't know who was what. I knew a few cars got away and could see Max (Blair) the whole time, but I thought there was at least one if not two cars that had ran off. It seemed like Bryce (Davis) had to be that car because of the speed he was carrying. I was gaining on him and wasn't sure if I was going to have enough time, but it all came together."
Davis, who won his 11th career Tour race on June 7 at McKean County Raceway, beat out Blair for runner-up and earned a career best payday of $7,000. "This is still nothing to be disappointed with, but I wish we were up on the stage," acknowledged the 33-year-old Canisteo, NY racer. "We had a great car all feature long, but got a little free at the end and I was trying to hang on. I saw his (Hess) nose there and thought maybe I'd switch up my lines and pretty much let him by. Congrats to him, he had a great run. We're still real pleased. We've had great runs here in the past and have won, but this is the most important one that we've been on the podium for."
(Note: The engines of Hess and Davis were tore down in post-race tech and were found to be 100% legal per the Chevrolet Performance 604 Technical Manual. The results will be official once the fuel and tire samples that were taken are verified to be in compliance.)
Blair, who won the 2019, 2020, and 2023 events, was third for $3,500 in his first RUSH start of 2024; in fact, it was the first time the Centerline Motorsports #111 was run since September 30, 2023 in the "Bill Hendren Memorial" at Pittsburgh PA Motor Speedway. All three podium finishers received a three-pack of premium products from Heritage Wine Cellars.
"The race track didn't do what I thought it was going to do," revealed the 34-year-old Centerville, Pa. standout. "I set up to run through the middle, but I just couldn't do it for some reason and had to be married into the bottom. I went around a couple lapped cars up the race track. I knew the laps were winding down so I moved up into (turn) three to see what was up there for a minute and Hess snuck on by, but I think he was by the far he the best car. The best car won the race so congrats to those guys. It was a long, hot weekend. The Super (Late Model) stuff didn't go how we wanted it to; not a terrible weekend, but not the weekend we were hoping for. Thanks to all of the fans- this place was packed, which is awesome. This is annually one of my favorite weekends of the year; we circle it and it and it's a lot of fun. The Pittsburgher was the last this car was running until three days ago. To come out and run third against this competition is nothing to hang your head about. Thanks to Lernerville along with Mike (Leone) and Vicki (Emig) for putting this on every year- it's a really cool deal."
Mason Zeigler started 13th and made a big charge through the field. Zeigler passed Montgomery for fourth on lap 39 and made up significant ground on the lead trio, but hit the cushion wrong on two occasions late, which kept him from contending. Zeigler earned $3,000 in also his first RUSH start since last year's "Bill Hendren Memorial", and also received the $50 Precise Racing Products "Pedal Down" Hard Charger.
Logan Roberson, the 2022 Tour Champion, passed Montgomery on lap 43 to finish fifth and earned $2,000. Montgomery, who finished third in the June 8 Marion Center event in his 2024 Tour debut, dropped to sixth for $1,500, but also received a spoiler kit from Ontime Body & Graphic. Pinkerous was seventh and continues to lead the points over Jeremy Wonderling, who ironically finished eighth. The 14-year-old Pinkerous has finished no worse than seventh all season. Daryl Charlier, who is chasing after the 3C Graphix Rookie-of-the-Year title, was ninth. Kyle Hardy, the 2021 Flynn's Tire/Gunter's Honey Tour Champion, was 10th for $1,000 in his first Tour start since April 15, 2023 at his home track- Winchester Speedway.
Damian Bidwell put on a dominating performance in the 15-lap $500 D&V Jewelers Non-Qualifier presented by Close Racing Supply. Bidwell started fourth and took the lead from Ashton Briggs on lap two before a caution for Ryan Hare. The final 13 laps went caution-free and Bidwell went on for a commanding victory by 7.159 seconds over Briggs! The 31-year-old Smethport, Pa. driver became the amazing 76th different winner in 94 non-qualifier events run all-time in his Tri-County Tire/D&K Transport/Prestige Countertop/Bootes Construction/Safelite Auto Glass/Bidwell Transport/Hansen Racing/Jim's Auto/CRS/Yoder Toter/Tru-Form-sponsored #1/2-Pint. Briggs was second and also received a $50 certificate from Holley Performance Group for being the first feature non-qualifier. Joey Zambotti III was third as 3C Graphix Rookie-of-the-Year candidates Ben Easler and Brad Mesler completed the top five.
Pinkerous set fast time overall against the 54-car field in FK Rod Ends "Shock the Clock" Qualifying on Thursday night with a lap of 16.995, which was only a little more than two tenths off the track record despite being held after six Lucas Oil Late Model heat races. Winning $25 FK Rod Ends heat races on Friday night were Pinkerous, Davis, Montgomery, Hess, and Charlier. Dusty Waters, Shane Crotty, and Braeden Dillinger won the three last chance B mains.
Montgomery won his first Sunoco Dash of the season for a $100 fuel card, which was the “John Buzzard Memorial” Dash that also paid $100 cash. Also winning $100 Sunoco fuel cards were Tour racers Pinkerous and Brad Mesler, while the $50 Sunoco fuel cards went to Dan Angelicchio, Cory Sines, Zach Kane, and Dusty Waters. Winning the $50 Landrum Performance Springs certificates were Max Blair, Cody Koteles, Ryan Montgomery, Kyle Zimmerman, and Jim Rasey.
Special thanks to Close Racing Supply for adding $500 into the D&V Jewelers Non-Qualifier payoff and also numerous contributors that allowed many drivers that failed to qualify for the feature to share in more than $3,600 in valuable product giveaways (see listing below)!
The Flynn’s Tire/Gunter's Honey Touring Series will return to action June 29-30 for the rescheduled Stateline-Eriez weekend that was rained out on May 11-12.
