A Win and Runner-Up Highlights Covington's Strong Past Week's Performance

Matt Covington Racing - Glenpool, OK (June 21st, 2023) Matt Covington earned his 3rd victory of the season and first ASCS National Tour win of the year this past Friday at Humboldt Speedway. On top of the win, the triple header race week also produced another near victory and runner-up on Saturday at 81 Speedway, along with a13th place finish that started the three nights off at Creek County on Thursday.

“We had the speed to put us up front all three nights,” stated Matt. “It was nice to finally get the first National win of the year, but the best thing about it is, we were in contention all three nights for a win as well.”

Thursday began with Covington being fastest in time trials and then running second in the heat, earning him the high point award and 6th starting position after the invert. Matt worked towards the front and was passing for 3rd, when he was tagged in the rear and spun. After working from the tail Matt would cross the checkers in 13th position.

“We were good Thursday and had the car to battled it out for the win,” Matt commented. “I found the speed on the top and was able to get up into 4th, working on third before the incident. It was early in the race and unfortunate, but we still were able to leave knowing we had the speed to contend for a win.”

Friday saw Covington finish 1st in overall time trials setting a new track record, along with a 3rd place finish in the heat, earning him the high point driver of the night again. Matt pulled the zero pill for the inversion which put him on the pole of the feature. From the drop of the green Matt set sail out front and was unchallenged as he patiently worked through lap traffic. Matt closed out the convincing win for his 3rd victory of the year, and first National score of the season.

Matt rolled into Saturday with momentum on his side from the previous night’s win, looking for another strong run.

With Saturday night’s action underway, the results mirrored a lot of the previous nights successes. Qualifying 1st overall and winning the heat, which resulted in high point driver and 6th place starting spot for the feature after the inversion. As the race clicked away and Covington worked into his rhythm, he found himself in third. When motor issues struck the leader bringing out the caution, Covington capitalized after the restart in the closing laps pulling beside the leader for the lead on the last lap, but couldn’t quite close the deal off the exit of two, and crossed the finish line in 2nd, 0.297 seconds back.

“I have a lot of confidence after last weekend,” stated Covington. “We are rolling good right now and it was great to get the win, but more importantly we were in contention every night last week. We have found a good balance and setup with the car right now. A lot of the credit goes to my buddies Chad Cypert that’s been helping me out a lot on the phone, and our team partner Vern Rengen whose vast knowledge has definitely got us focused in the right direction. I also need to give a shout out to Steven Lane and all the hard work he’s been putting in this season on the car. On top of those guys, I would like to THANK all of our partners and sponsors who have been behind us, even when we’re not doing well their support keeps us out here on the road. I’m very optimistic about our performance and hope to keep the momentum going.”

Up next for Matt and the American Sprint Car Series National Tour is a Thursday night clash at Outlaw Motor Speedway and then Caney Valley Speedway on Saturday.
