Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (June 23, 2021) – Challenging track conditions combined with poor pill draws proved to be difficult obstacles for Alex Hill during the two-day Fred Brownfield Classic at Grays Harbor Raceway last weekend.

“It wasn’t the best weekend for us,” she said. “The track was mostly one lane around the bottom and we started at the back of both of our heat races. It would have been nice to have time trials.

“We had a fast car, but it was really difficult to pass. We ended up missing the A Main by one position each night. The breaks just went the wrong way.”

The Hill’s Racing Team driver began the event in good fashion on the opening lap of her heat race until misfortune set the tone for the weekend.

“We had a really good start in the heat race on Saturday,” she said. “We passed a couple of cars on the start, and it was looking like we could get about four more in one corner. But then a car slowed – I think he had a mechanical problem – and we got together. I had a lot of damage to the wing and the headers were crushed. I kept racing, but probably should’ve pulled in.

“Then I had to start seventh in the B Main. We made it up to fourth, but they transferred the top three.”

Sunday offered little change in fortune or track conditions.

“The track was really dry on Sunday,” she said. “It was already black during hot laps. I started in the back of my heat race again. I had a good start, but someone spun and I had to give it up.

“I got up to third at the start of the B Main, but someone spun and we had a restart. It was difficult to pass and I finished where I started in fourth.”

Hill utilized a provisional to tag the rear of the field for the A Main, but pulled off the track early.

She will move on to conceivably better fortunes this weekend during the Jim Raper Memorial Dirt Cup at Skagit Speedway in Alger, Wash. The action runs Thursday through Saturday at the high-banked dirt oval.

“Skagit isn’t really my favorite size of track, but I enjoy racing it more than the other tracks its size,” she said. “Hopefully, we’ll have a little better luck there.”
