Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 6, 2020) – Alex Hill enjoyed her career-best COMP Cams Short Track Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last weekend at I-30 Speedway.

Hill qualified for the A Main on both Friday and Saturday night, and she made progress in each of the seven races she competed in during the 33rd annual event, which welcomed more than 75 drivers.

“I was really happy with the way things went,” said Hill, who had found the Arkansas bullring challenging in previous years. “Except for the crash in the feature on Friday, it was a really good weekend for us.”

Hill credited some extra track time, a relative lack of misfortune and a well-prepared car for her displays of speed each time she was on the track.

“I got to practice there on Thursday night this year,” she said. “I’ve never been able to do that before because I’ve had school. I think that helped a lot. Also, we drew pretty well this year, especially on Friday.

“I had a great car each time I was on the track. I’m grateful to Daryl and Nick for that.”

Hill’s weekend got off to a solid start on Friday when she won her heat race from second and then finished fourth in her qualifier after starting sixth. She rolled off ninth on the A Main starting grid.

“We were doing really well and were battling for fourth around Lap 15 when I got a little too low in the turn and hit the infield tire and flipped,” she said. “That was really frustrating for me because everything had been going so well up to that point and we had a shot at a top-three finish.”

Hill was unable to finish the race and was credited with a 13th-place finish, which is her career-best result at the track.

On Saturday, Hill raced from seventh to fourth in her heat race and she finished sixth in her qualifier after starting seventh. While she fell a few spots short of qualifying for the A Main when she finished sixth in a B Main, she and Mark Smith earned the final two starting positions into the prestigious main event by being the top two drivers in passing points for the weekend who didn’t qualify through on Saturday.

“I was proud of our team for earning a spot in Saturday’s A Main due to our overall performance for the weekend,” she said. “Unfortunately, the track wasn’t very racy in the A Main and took rubber. But we were still able to move up a few positions and finish 16th.”

Hill, who climbed into the top 10 in the ASCS National Tour championship standings, will be idle from racing this weekend before competing in the 47th annual Winter Nationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, on Oct. 16-17 with the ASCS National Tour.
