Sams III Taking Lessons From Frustrating Short Track Nationals

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (Oct. 5, 2020) – A tough pill draw, a high car count and tricky track conditions hampered Danny Sams III last weekend during the 33rd annual COMP Cams Short Track Nationals presented by Hoosier Tires.
“To be honest, it was one of the worst weekends of my career,” he said. “It was one of those weekends where nothing went right. We’ll take what we learned and move forward.”
The Sams LaMountain Racing driver, who was one of more than 75 drivers in competition, finished eighth in a heat race to open the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour action at I-30 Speedway on Friday.
“We had a good initial start and they called it back,” he said. “After the second attempt as I was passing for sixth me and another guy got together so we fell back to eighth.”
Sams III was relegated to a C Main, in which he charged from 13th to fourth. However, that was one spot shy of a transfer and ended his night.
Sams III started toward the back of his heat race on Saturday as well.
“I was up to fourth from sixth and I made a couple of driver mistakes,” he said. “I made a good initial move and made up some positions. Then I got passed and made a couple of wrong moves.”
A seventh-place finish in the heat race sent Sams III to a C Main. He started eighth and worked toward a transfer position before fading to a seventh-place result.
“I got up to third and was in a transfer position, but I couldn’t get the car to work properly,” he said. “We just missed the setup. You had to be at the bottom of the track and I couldn’t get it to stay down there. Going up top, there wasn’t anything.”
Sams III will take this weekend off before wrapping up the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour season on Oct. 16-17 at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, during the 47th annual Winter Nationals. He enters the event ranked 11th in the championship standings – only 16 points out of the top 10.
