Inside Line Promotions – GREENWOOD, Neb. (Sept. 15, 2020) – Danny Sams III tied his second-best outing of the season with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour last Saturday during his debut at I-80 Speedway.

The Sams LaMountain Racing driver rallied from 21st to 13th during the Casey’s General Store Midwest Fall Brawl. The eight positions gained were the third most of any driver in the main event.

Sams III began the night by contending for a heat race win early before finishing fourth.

“I was passing for the lead about four laps in when the caution came out,” he said. “Blake Hahn and Dylan Westbrook were right on us. It was a four-car battle for the lead and I ended up on the short end of the stick.”

An eighth-place finish in a qualifier relegated Sams III to a B Main. He dropped back a few spots early, but rallied in the closing laps to claim the third-and-final transfer position into the A Main.

“At the end we made a bunch of passes on the last restart that put us in a position to transfer to the A Main,” he said. “I went way up against the fence and got all my positions back. We passed for the final transfer coming out of turn four to the checkered flag.”

That lined the Rookie of the Year contender up on the inside of the 11th row for the main event.

“I was able to find a groove on the bottom of turns one and two,” he said. “In turns three and four I was trying everything, but in turns one and two that’s where I was beating everyone.”

Sams III methodically worked his way to a 13th-place effort.

“It felt good,” he said. “We struggled at the beginning of the night and made it hard on ourselves. To find speed in the race car that we can build on for next time was great.”

Next up is the 10th annual Jesse Hockett/Daniel McMillin Memorial this Thursday through Saturday at Lucas Oil Speedway in Wheatland, Mo.

“I went there last year and we got crashed,” he said. “Every time we got going something would happen. I’m looking forward to this year. We have some notes in the book. Hopefully we can get the car where we need it to be since I have experience at the track, unlike a lot of the tracks we’ve gone to this year.”
