Covington Preparing for STN after Rallying for 6th Place Finish at Lucas Oil

CG Motorsports– Glenpool, Ok. (Sept 27th, 2019) Matt Covington and team rallied back from a rough Thursday and Friday night to earn a 6th place finish in the finale A main at Lucas Oil Speedway for the Jesse Hockett Memorial.

The weekend started off on the wrong side of the draw sheet for Covington. On Thursday, the draw started him in the back of the heat where he was collected up in an accident trying to avoid a crossed-up race car. The B feature proved to be just as unfavorable with a deep starting position and a torn-up racecar. Matt was pinched into the wall trying to work the high side, ending his night with considerable damage to his Triple X/Shark engines mount. Due to the time constraints and dismal state of the car, the team chose to use a provisional and attempted to start the feature, but had to pull off at the start.

Friday night’s action started out with an almost equally unfortunate pill draw. The heat effort placed him in the back of a qualifier where an unavoidable car spun out in front of him, causing a flat right rear and rear end damage. That set him up towards the back of the B and too far from a transfer, only being able to make it up to 7th by the race’s end. Once again, he took a provisional for the A main and decided to preserve his car by pulling off.

After an exhausting first two nights that wielded no results, Covington found himself mid-pack in a last chance qualifier on Saturday. Only being able to gain two spots, placing him 5th in the first B feature. Finally, able to demonstrate the speed the car had all weekend, Matt pulled off the win. With an opportunity in front of him, Matt was determined to make the best of it. At the drop of the A feature’s green he went to work, clawing from 17th all the way to 6th to salvage the weekend.

“I’m still recovering from last weekend,” stated Covington. “Between the mental frustration, crashing multiple times, and late nights trying to repair the car, it was probably one of the most stressful race weekends I’ve ever had. So, Saturday felt like a win to me because, at the start of it, I wasn’t sure if we were even going to be able to make the A main. I knew we had a fast car, but starting in the back all weekend just seemed to put us in the wrong place at the wrong time a lot. I’m just glad we could end it with a good finish. And I appreciate Mike and the rest of the team for all their effort this weekend. Despite being tired, they continued to work hard and not give up when it seemed like the odds were against us all weekend. Without them, we wouldn’t have had a shot at a good run on Saturday. We are going to stay home this weekend and get everything back together before Short-Track so we can do our best.”
