Crockett Earns Hard Charger Award During Ultimate Challenge

Inside Line Promotions – OSKALOOSA, Iowa (Aug. 8, 2019) – Roger Crockett capped a busy week of Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour competition by earning the Hard Charger Award on Tuesday during the Sage Fruit Ultimate Challenge presented by Searsboro Telephone Co.

Crockett was hampered by a high pill draw early in the night at Southern Iowa Speedway, where he advanced from seventh to sixth place in a heat race. He had the same results in the B Main to garner the final transfer position into the main event.

“We were third quick in hot laps and I felt good,” he said. “I don’t remember changing anything for the heat. I didn’t get that great of a start. After a couple of laps that place gets strung out and it’s hard to pass so the start is pretty important. We worked on the car a little bit for the B Main and it was probably the worst it was all night. The car felt really good in the A Main though. I wish the track wouldn’t have gotten so abrasive around the bottom. I feel we could have got a few more spots if it hadn’t done that.”

Crockett rallied from 22nd to an 11th-place result. His 11 positions gained were the most by any driver.

Crockett kicked off the racing action in Iowa last Friday at Knoxville Raceway in Knoxville, where nearly 100 drivers tackled the 29th annual My Place Hotels 360 Knoxville Nationals presented by Great Southern Bank.

Crockett qualified 30th quickest after going out during the second half of the 50-plus car field. He then won a heat race to lock himself into the main event. Crockett gained a trio of positions in the feature to finish 17th.

“It was fresh laps on a new frame as we tried a new Maxim chassis,” he said. “We were really good in hot laps and the track changed a little in qualifying. With me not running Knoxville for a year we missed one thing that ruined our qualifying. In the heat the car was phenomenal. We left the car alone from the heat and with just not racing enough I should have freed it up to make sure we were good in traffic in the feature. We were just too tight. We just haven’t raced here enough the last few years to get a handle of what our baseline needs throughout the night.”

His preliminary performance relegated the team to the C Main on Saturday. Crockett placed third to transfer into the back of the B Main. He exited the race early and was credited with a 22nd-place result.

“The car felt really, really good in both races,” he said. “I felt like we could make some progress. We had some smoke come out and our oil pressure gauge broke in the B Main. When that happens it’s not a good combination so we pulled off.”

Crockett plans on racing at Knoxville Raceway this Friday and Saturday during the 59th annual NOS Energy Drink Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores.
